Kid got in and will start Software Engineering next month.
So.. yeah, free isnt actually free. He needed pretty good grades to get in the public university here in Spain, but its a 4 year career and costs about 800 bucks per year, 80 bucks x10 months. This would be includding some perks, a good insurance in case something bad happens. This was optional but for 10 bucks a month it made sense.
Anyway. Not free, but rather, reasonably priced I suppose.:D:

As you noted, your son must meet certain criteria to qualify for the "free" education by having good grades. There are other criteria that must be met, and not all course work is eligible to be paid for. These limitations are typical in other countries. Contrast that to the "free" education being demanded by the leftist in the US. They love to bring up the fact that many countries offer a "free" college education, but they disingenuously leave out the fact that this foreign college education is restricted to good students, is means tested, and that not all courses are eligible. They don't tell the whole story because their version of a "free" college would have little or no grade requirements, would not be means tested, and the course studies would not be restricted. Little antifa Billy, who lives in his rich parents basement, could burn up the taxpayers money for a decade working towards his Transgendered Women's Studies.

Thats true. He got in but it was HARD and the grades and tests left most of his class out. Hell, i thing that out of 30, only 3 or so made it in. Its also a system in which the better carriers demand the better grades. So say you want to go to the public med shoot, fine, you need almost straight As, very very hard. You still have some superior grade stuff you can do but if you dont get the grades and still want to go to college, then you have to go to a private once, which while not as expensive as American ones are still pretty damn expensive. So the public ones would be both a reward for the good students, and also an investment of some sort, so that the smart kids have that as a chance that would otherwise not go to college becuase they cant afford it. I think its a good system overall, being black brown, minority or wahtever gets you ZERO points here.

We pretty much have the same thing here, its called scholarships.

By the way, congrats to your son. He seems like a smart guy and you should be proud.

Thanks! Yes, he's a good kid. We're proud. He was already programing well beyond all other kids in his school, making videogames and such. I asked him for a videogame in which a certain brave 17 year old boy with a green shirt and blue jeans goes around a neighborhood shooting misterious attackers dressed in black... a couple weeks later he's almost done.:D:

We have a program in NJ that offers the first two years "free" at the local county college based on grades during high school. Not everyone qualifies. Those who worked the hardest get to take advantage of the program.

Thanks Sailor! man, yes, its pretty nice.
It has its things like everywhere else, especially now with such a socialist government, but there's hope with conservatives making big gains lately.
But people are mostly good hearted, not that many crazies around, safe, good healtcare, great food and if you like sailing it doesnt get any better. I HAVE to learn how to sail this year.

I have a friend who served on the USS Forrestal during the 70's. He's said the exact same things about Spain as you did.

It's a minimum of $800 a month to hire childcare for working parents while they work here. $800 a year is so inexpensive , good on him for qualifying !
