I am going to have to reposition the cameras around my house. This morning my wife to her box garden to pick a squash for lunch. The garden is located in my backyard (100% fenced with chain link fence) just outside the spare bedroom window. She came running back in and asked me why I had stepped on her squash when I was mowing? I told her that I didn't stand in the gardens, even when picking veggies. (Why I built the box gardens in the first place)

I went out and looked and there were large footprints in the corner and middle of the box. I wear a size 8.5 and my wife is a women's size 5, this footprint has a good 2 inches on my foot. I told her to go in and call the police, while I looked around for me foot prints. I was able to track the prints from the street, down along the side of my house, over the fence and into my box garden.

Not sure if it was a peeping tom or someone trying a home invasion. The cop asked if we had a gun, I showed him my CCP. He told me that there were break ins in the neighborhood behind us.

So today I am moving a camera to catch the side of the house and positioning another to catch the backyard. I am also installing dowels on the windows to prevent them from being opened from the outside. It sucks that I have to go to such lengths to protect what is mine. Or maybe I should just let the a$$hole break in and give them a lead based, high speed gift.

A large dog or two is the best security system a family can have it's been tried & proven since the short faced bear & saber toothed cat were a concern.

Of course dogs can be poisoned but, if that happens you get on extra high alert & keep the guns within hands reach untill you can get another dog.

Good luck with your dirt bag problem.

I don't have camera's and some broke the outside pain on one of my basement windows. I guess the heard my dogs start barking and decided to leave without breaking the inside pane. Fortunately I have a life time warrenty on my windows, if broken for any reason the company comes out and replaces them free.

Depending on your windows, the dowels will prevent them from sliding, but WILL NOT prevent them from being pushed upward to release them from the track on the bottom.

I found this out the hard way. Saw foot prints outside a window. Put in dowels and 4 days later was broken into. Cops came and showed me how easy it was to push up on the window and take it totally out of the track.

He said the only way to prevent this was to place a sheet metal(alum window frames) through the lower frame into the sliding window frame.

The electronic motion detector is a good idea, they do work and are inexpensive. Keep those cameras on, post some signs as well. I have the "We don't call 911" signs in bright yellow all around the farm. Every little thing you do can make the difference.

Whoa.... lets all just notch the paranoia meter down a few notches... Is it right to be cautious? Of course it is... but before you go all henny penny here, lets take a breath and calm down... I seriously doubt you were being "cased" as somebody put it... more then likely, somebody simply took a shortcut, and squished a mellon... nothing to freak out about...

If it makes you feel better to put dowel rods in your windows, or even to cover them with rebar like they do in the "hood" then by all means do what you feel you need to... but i personally wouldnt loose too much sleep over it.

MM, how would you know what was the interlopers motivation? Are you psychic?

I would assume that the motivation was sinister and secure my house accordingly.

Similar thing happened to me last year. I found a pair of badly poo stained womens panties outside my bathroom window. They were too big to be my daughters & too small to be my wifes so I figgure a sicko brought them a left them by accident or on purpose.

I called the cops & found out there were some pervs in the area but, they wouldn't say who. So I waited till late afternoon when all the neighbors would likely be home from work, set up the man siloute target & put 3 clips in a nice group of head shots on it with the M-1 Garand. I then placed the board with target stappled on it under my bath room window & left it there untill the first good rain. I then moved it into my car port where it could be seen from the road just to let passers by know that I am in the mind set of shooting people.

I'm a firm believer in a big dog but, I've had bad luck lately. My rottweiler ran off after a deer & I found him splattered on the Highway a week later. I then got an anatolian shepard who turned out to be a chicken killer so I got rid of him. The panties incadent happened between the Rot & the shepard. I still don't have a big dog (just a little half terrier/half opposum) but, I'm looking.

Better safe than sorry. You can get a couple Game camera for next to nothing that take pictures during the night with a IR lens and stores the photos silently. You can set it to take as many as you want. They are good quality and will show any movement around the house. You can place it by the windows and actually watch them walk up to the windows. Works perfectly

wouldn't you need a lot of memory if you want to record the whole night?
