ANTIFREEZE AND STERILIZING CRYSTALS
You'll need potassium permanganate sterilizer crystals for this. Put a teaspoon of them on to something flammable like a sheet of paper or dry cloth. Add a few drops of neat antifreeze then wrap the cloth or paper up around the mixture tightly-it needs this to get the chemical reaction going. Arrange the tinder and/or kindling. Wait a minute. It should ignite on its own as the glycerine in the antifreeze starts a chemical reaction with the potassium permanganate.
SUGAR AND STERILIZING CRYSTALS
Another use for potassium permaganate. Mix nine units of potassium permanganate with one unit of sugar. Make sparks by hitting it or rubbing it between two stones.
THROAT LOZENGES, SUGAR AND CAR BATTERY ACID
This only works with throat pills that use potassium chlorate as an active ingredient. Crush the tablets-you'll need a ratio of three units of potassium chlorate to one of sugar, so experiment with quantities. For spontaneous combustion, let a few drops of sulphuric acid-found in car batteries-fall into this mixture. It burns fiercely and will light damp kindling.
SODIUM CHLORATE AND SUGAR
Sodium chlorate is the basis for a lot of weedkillers. Mix three units of sodium chlorate to one of sugar. It burns fiercely and ignites even damp wood. This mixture is unstable and can go off if struck a sharp blow.
