Iran’s Gen. Soleimani killed in airstrike at Baghdad airport.

This is a HUGE game changer!!!!

https://www.defense.gov/Newsroom/Releases/Release/Article/2049227/statement-by-secretary-of-defense-dr-mark-t-esper-as-prepared/

Soleimani has been described as "the single most powerful operative in the Middle East today" and the principal military strategist and tactician in Iran's effort to combat Western influence and promote the expansion of Shiite and Iranian influence throughout the Middle East.[27] In Iraq, as the commander of the Quds force, he is believed to have strongly influenced the organization of the Iraqi government, notably supporting the election of previous Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri Al-Maliki.[27][37] Soleimani has even been described as being "Iran’s very own Erwin Rommel".[38]

Idiotic Democratic response......

Sen. Chris Murphy expressed dismay that the United States killed Iranian Gen. Qassim Soleimani without first obtaining congressional approval.

"Soleimani was an enemy of the United States," the Connecticut Democrat tweeted Thursday night. "That’s not a question. The question is this — as reports suggest, did America just assassinate, without any congressional authorization, the second most powerful person in Iran, knowingly setting off a potential massive regional war?"

Here's a proper response!!!!!

Republican Nebraska Sen. Ben Sasse later tore into Murphy, tweeting, "This tweet is simply drunk partisanship. Gen. Soleimani has killed hundreds and hundreds of Americans, and was actively plotting more. This commander-in-chief — any C-in-C. — has an obligation to defend America by killing this bastard."

A lot of people are warning of WWIII or something, but the ball's in the Iranians' court now, and it's at least possible they'll be backed down by this attack.

Many people writing online are one-trick ponies as Trump contrarians.

They're not really expert enough to make the claims that they make. But they got the idea from somewhere that when it comes to Trump, you're just supposed to say it.

There's hardly a bold military move he could make anywhere in the world, for any purpose, without them crying it's about to unleash hell.

Iran's got a lot more capability than a lot of people, but they're not really on a par with us, are they?

Also just thinking of the joint Iranian / Chinese / Russian exercise from a little while ago. Maybe it was important to respond to that (through action), too.

War with Iran would be a serious undertaking for sure. The biggest conflict since Vietnam.

No one really wants this though. Iran likes to bluster but knows they cannot hope to win. Trump wants nothing to do with a ME war, especially going into an election.

I see a minimum response from Iran to which we won't respond much... back to business as usual.

There is no way President Trump is going to war. If Iran retaliates in a massive way.... For them it will be death by a thousand cuts. No boots on the ground, but drone attacks on their soil.... along with manned air strikes..... along with missile attacks.

The first thing to go will be those Nuclear Facilities with all those centrifuges.

In 30 days, the Iranian military would be reduced to a whimpering, anemic band.

I don't see any alternative. This was moving from proxy fights to taking out what is probably the 3rd in command of the entire Iranian nation. There's going to be a fight. This was a blatant act of war. Iran's leaders at this point are going to be in self-preservation mode waiting to be killed in the next air strike. Of course the alternative was to keep fighting a nasty proxy war until we either had to reestablish an occupation of Iraq or flee.

I'm confident enough I started a war thread on the disaster board. At the very least we're going to be trading strategic attacks. Air/Naval/Ballistic Missile bombardments. And yes, Iran has the capacity to severely damage and disable US bases in the region. Then of course there's all the interruption of oil supply.

Everybody wants peace. However comma, if you go to war, you do so decisively.
This was a strategic and decisive air strike.
If the Iranians escalate the tension, we level their oil infrastructure.
No income to fund their proxy wars.

Interruption of oil supply? Trump has made us nearly oil self sufficient.
We have been paying the Iranian price for Obama’s candy-ass pacifism.

Great analysis to read. Loved every word of it:

original source:

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/01/03/opinion/trump-iran-suleimani-assassination-baghdad.html

"The world to which we wake up today, rid of its most accomplished and deadly terrorist, is a better place. Nowhere is this insight more evident than throughout the Middle East, where individuals are posting joyous videos to social media, celebrating the death of the author of so much of their misery. We should all — even those among us who don’t particularly care for Mr. Trump — join them in their good cheer, and continue to repeal Mr. Suleimani’s murderous anti-American legacy."

The difference about Vietnam bs. Iran si that in Vietnam US was trying to invade the country and keep it for larger geopolitical goals.

With Iran there will be just bombing runs.

Remember the 3 day war against Iraq by Bush Sr. That is what is next for Iran if they don't get the hint sent yesterday.

I know the Vietnam comparison is overplayed about as much as the Nazi comparisons.

I meant it sincerely though.

Iran is much different than Iraq. If we got into a full on, no holds barred war with them... It will take a while to kill them all and subdue the country.

We would likely take 4 digit losses in the process, however short it may be.

Sure we are better trained and better equipped... But when bullets, artillery and missiles fly, people die.

I dont think its going to come to that, but if it does, its not going to be a walk in the park or a mass surrender like the Iraqis

Listen ... you can defeat somebody with nothing but a needle in the correct situation. All you need is to poke him with the needle in his skin 10000 times while he cannot retaliate. By the end of it he will do whatever you ask him to do not to get poke with the needle one more time.

If US stick to the plan and hits from afar as much as possible there is nothing Iran can do.

The dems in typical libtard fashion are going apefeces over this & want an investigation saying Trump didn't have the authority to do this, which of course he does. Funny thing is barry droned & bombed DOZENS if not hundreds of people, including American citizens & children & what did they do about that? They gave him a freakin' Nobel peace prize. To say their hypocrisy knows no bounds is an understatement. I can't believe that supposed undecided ~ 1/3 of voters can watch their shenanigans & ever take them seriously. Then again, I think they're probably not that bright to begin with & have the memory like swiss cheese.
