I just bought this single shot 410 shotgun for backpacking. It's 29 inches long and only 3 pounds! Has anyone else ever used one? Comments?

I hope you are taking a bigger gun with you on your Sierra Nevada trip...

I haven't used this model of shotgun but I do have a .410 single shot shotgun, it sits in a closet collecting dust because all I would use it for would be small game and snakes, when I am out in the woods I take my 30.30 or a 12 gauge.

Snake Charmers they're reliable, compact and work great on snakes and possums, You can also get buckshot and Slugs for it (if anyone still has ammo) they're handy little shotguns. :thumb: and they're Kali legal by (I believe) 1/2 inch. I've put close to 300 rds thru one and have never had a problem even with wolfs metallic shells. Worse thing is everyone wants to shoot it when your with friends and naturally they don't bring any .410 ammo  oh, well it's fun.

I have the Snake Tamer by NEF in .410. Basically it's the same gun but the stock holds 5 shells. I would like to get the survivor stock for it. It's a good little gun. It was a spur of the moment buy, plus I had a bunch of .410 buck and slug ammo. It makes a good little camping gun.

I had one also, wish I still did. It was handy for walking around the woods for squirrel and bird, I didn't have to worry too much about snakes in CT but I think it would be sweet for that. It was real easy to shoot and didn't take a lot to get use to it, I never shot it from my shoulder, too small, just held it out in front and blasted. Be a sweet Jeep gun.

I've played around with a lot of easily portable/compact/packable shotguns and DO NOT LIKE the .410s. I have found that a 20 gauge single shot, such as the H & R pardner, with a reasonably long barrel, is still very lightweight, is highly reliable and also packs far more punch that does a 410. My H & R 20 gauge with choate stock and fore-end has survival essentials inside the stock/forend, is more accurate than a 410, and has a better chance of hitting what it's aimed at than does a snake charmer 410. Hardly more weight, as well.

Just my deux centimes, of course. I could be wrong. Tom.

I got a Rossi .410 single shot as a first gun. The .410 buckshot should not be underestimated especially in a 3 in shell. I've killed two boars cleanly at distances between 18 and 20 yards. I have since gotten a 12 gauge, but I love the .410 shells because I can carry many more in a smaller space. I was also thinking of getting a snake charmer for backpacking for the same reasons. I do live in Florida though if I was in Grizzly country I would probably get something different. I can't believe those things are legal in California. Also, I wish ammo wasn't so expensive. It is a blast to shoot, but it's my most expensive gun to feed.

Thanks for reminding us all. This causes me to mention the lowly .22lr. It is as ubiquitous as can be. I like them for being so cheep and yet also effective in a real scrappy way. :thumb: Who needs to blow a canon sized hole through prey when a simple .22 will do? Anyway, this thread is about that slick .410 snakecharmer. I'm about to get a .410 because it is very cheep to buy this one I know about. I've been interested to know what I can really do with it, even though I wasn't really in the market to buy any shotguns. So you killed boars with it. What about birdshot? What would the effective range be on a short barrel .410 like this snakecharmer?

Of the 7 times I've traveled through Canada from the lower 48 to Alaska, that gun is the only one I was asked if I had. Apparently, Canada doesn't much care for them. I had my Springfield M6 and they didn't even want to see that.

I got one and so does the better half. I tend to run into rattle snakes in this part of GA and I can tell you, it does it's job!

I have an old machete sheath on the tractor I slip one into and it fits perfect. 410 really isn't that exensive here, 9-$10 a box..I bought my slugs at sortsmansguide in bulk so I am set on each.

It's legal in California. What is not legal is the Thompson / Center .45 LC / .410. Shotgun pistols are not allowed.

The Snake Charmer does NOT fire .45 LC.

I think NEF makes a similar gun, albeit 6 lbs. that fires. .45 LC / .410. It's legal (saw one at J&R in Livermore) because it's not a pistol.

I really thought about getting one of these myself. Keep us informed on how you like it.

BTW, there are videos on Youtube about how to reload .410 shotshells in the field.

howdy all. I found this thread while looking for .410 stuff.

I've got 2 .410s a single shot rossi youth combo .410/.22lr and a mossberg 500e pump with a 24 inch full choke and an 18inch cylinder bore.

if i'm not mistaken, a snake charmer was used by Les Strounds freind Bob Wilson to kill a squirrel and a grouse on of Les last survivorman episodes.

Taurus

The Taurus Judge is pretty neat, and while it's a 5 shot revolver, it shoots the .45 Long Colt, it also shoots .410 shotgun shells.
I'm getting the Stainless 3" barrel with the 3" chamber, so you can shoot any .410 shells or .45 LC in it, it also has a fiber optic front sight.

The Judge is illegal in Calif, as is the Comanche single shot .45 LC pistol. Calif. classifies these as a shotgun with a bbl that's too short. Any shotgun or gun that can shoot shotgun rounds (a squishy definition) must have an 18.5" (I think) bbl.

This rifle seems interesting:

The out the door cost (including tax and fees) here in Calif. is about $463.

I would like to see the snake charmer chambered in 28 guage. It would be a better choice for ladies that want more firepower than the 410 but don't like the recoil of the 20. The wepon is designed not to be fired from the shoulder because the stock is to short.

I fire mine from the shoulder...have for many years. I guess that's why it has a shoulder stock?

Also just picked up 2 boxes of 410 000 buck 2 1/2", 20/rds box for 12.75 each at china mart.
