In a survival situation A, smooth bore' muzzle loading lint lock pistol would be one step above a "rock" My bad, A rock is always ready to use. I go to all the gun shops in Las vegas area, at least once a month and I go to all the gun shows and the NRA SHOT show. With the greatest of respect I say get a toy gun and paint the red part on the front of the barrel black. Better yet carry the rock.

No mate it doesn't work that way here. We have two major parties, so we are stuck between a rock & a hard place. What we need to do is sack the government & put a new system in place that does not encourage corruption.

No its one step above 'most melee and hand to hand weapons' which is actually quite useful, historically. Survival discussions also include scenarios of being reduced to blackpowder technology after all.

I am in the USA so my comments should be viewed within that context, but in a pinch any gun is better than no gun and if I only had a smoothbore flintlock horse pistol I would make the most of it and bugger on mate! This is a short range arm for use within 10-15 metres, so buck and ball rocks! Then you can kill the threat, steal the bad guy's AK or FAL and carry on...

Thanks Mike, I personally welcome any discussion from non australians and it can be as nice as harsh as they like, on any subject they like ( our gun laws, culture whateever) as long as they are taking the time to give an opinion, n and don't mind getting an opinion back.

Actually one line hecklers don't bother me either, its all part of forumming. I guess on a small forum like this too much heckling could deter folks from posting which would be a shame.

I'd like to stimulate a bit more talk on this forum actually by all creeds and countries. Some of the larger gun forums on the net, the Aussie/NZ forums often have decent activity and a lot of north americans/europeans joining in too. We are known to have much poorer gun representation but the worlds largest huntable game fields, mostly no bag limits, no seasons, usually unguided. If you want to know whether XYZ bullet really works, find an aussie who has shot game into 4 figure numbers, he will be happy to talk to you about it.

You guys might even get more airplay on the international forums if you condensed them slightly? Say Europe, Asia and Oceania etc instead of individual countries... random suggestion. I am no forum expert... I will say 'other countries' don't mind being combined somewhat on US based forums, its goes with the turf.

Well I do mind, there is no excuse for rudeness. If they don't have anything nice to say, then don't say anything. If we can't have a sensible discussion on a forum seeing each others point of view, then there is no point being on that forum.

They are typically cheaper, load faster and can fire a variety of ammo (round ball, birdshot, buckshot, glass, rocks, cut up nails, elbow maccaroni...).

They are also typically of a larger gauge. A 20 gauge round ball from a pistol at 20 feet is going to ruin your day.

Wouldn't be my first choice, but in an environment of single shot weapons and machetes I'd feel pretty good about owning one.

We can own almost anything you guys can handguns wise ( eg BP, rimfire, centrefire, glocks, 1911, magnum revolvers, 500 linebaugh, double barrel 12bore howdah pistols etc) the issues are we can't hunt with them, and everything is registered.

The assumption is if major SHTF were suddenly to strike( not involving government tyranny) whatever you have in the safe, you would of course use in the new world.

I think that's awesome.
I don't know much about them, but I'd guess there's a variety of options for loads? Perhaps a solid ball, or buckshot, maybe chain-shot?

Way better than a rock. And would probably be pretty useful as a bludgeon if it came down to it.
I'd love to see a range report.

ETA: Saw the appropriately named Flinter answered the above. Now I want one...
