I found an outfit in Northwoods of Wisconsin that will custom build one of those tiny homes on wheels, that you tow behind your truck.

The average price seems to be around $60,000-$80,000. For that kind of money... I will stay in my $20,000 Mobile Home Trailer.

However.... winter is approaching. The Weather Channel is once again predicting "colder than average" winter.

I will be dreaming about the *tiny house movement* all winter long. I promise!

For some people it's more a matter of being able to do it, or not being able to do it. Well for many people really.

We'd love to build one of these on the back of our place for instance. Anyone that can swing property somewhere might be able to afford one of these as a BOL or just as a lake house or a vacation home away from home. There are some folks that might trade off living small for being able to afford a nicer new place. Some just want to live with as little as possible.

I built my place with a friend and costs are by the square foot for everything from the slab through framing through roofing. It does make sense to bear in mind that each additional square foot will have a cost that add up to large numbers. I'm setting my sights on something like that first post for the back. I enjoy a good construction project as long as I can afford to pay for it.

I think doh got it right. Instead of forcing Agenda 21, let's make it Trendy!
I don't see any Agenda whatever nonsense myself. These are not for everyone for sure. :)

Looking at it didn't cost much and anything that you see you can build, or hire someone else to build?

Storage is a big deal, though. It would require a separate storage area I guess for many of us because we have so many things that need to be close to us. Shipping containers might be a good choice here.

In lots of places in the UK, houses are quite small. Dinky little rooms. The lounge, what we call a living room or den, is often like 10'x10 or 10x12, bedrooms can fit a queen sized bed with enough room for a couple of bedside tables and not much else. Kitchens are often smaller than the lounge, much like what you'd find in an efficiency apartment here. A lot of people are already living in tiny houses. And I don't think most people can afford to buy even a little piece of land in some out of the way place anymore because I was quite shocked by real estate prices there. I really feel kind of sorry for young people there who want to have a modest home of their own, because prices are hyper inflated and it's just not feasable for them to buy.

Land prices in particular have gone up so much in the last 10 years here in the U.S. it's hard to believe. Used to be a person could scrape up six or eight thousand dollars and buy an acre or two (or more) somewhere in the country, but not anymore.

Sure they can.

Just not generally in any place there's much employment to speak of.

My property cost me $812.50/acre in 2011.

I am not pushing the notion of doing business with anyone. I'm just sharing neat photos and ideas that anyone interested might take and make their own. That's how we designed our place. We looked at photos and bought a pad of graph paper.

WE full time in our 29 ft travel trailer. Traded a 1200 sq. ft home in the city for a larger lot in the country that costs us waaaaaay less. We have added about 15 minutes to our commute, but it's traffic free and a much prettier drive. And the wife had to shoo away a herd of 30 whitetail deer this am to walk the dogs, so when the SHTF-the groceries come right to the door! And I still have a large lot a couple hours away that I'll move to when finances will allow. All paid for. Freedom for me is living debt free in a couple years.
