I suggest you look for a used older forest service SUV, they typically used full time 4FD Dodge Ramchargers.

Mine had a 360 V8, a tourque flight auto trans, and a NP203 full time transfer case, and a limited slip rear axle. Add some really good sized tires (12.5 x 33 in) and they can go anywhere. Who cares about scratched and dents cause you have only spent 3-4K.

Be prepared for major servicing and repair, the USFS really uses them before selling them. But once they run right they will go anywhere.

Whats a HUMMVE??? i think you mean HMMWV.... ;)

im messing with you.. all the ideas above are along the same lines i was going to say, i would be picky about capacity and and storage areas within the vehicle as well. Ford Broncos are nice since it keeps your preps dry, and makes a nice sleeping area for that BO trip.

I have a 1987 chevy suburban 4x4 350 with a 700r4 tranny. It is my bug out truck.

I can haul a full sheet of plywood inside the cabin with all doors closed, and still carry 3-4 passengers on the front seat. Parts are ubiquitous, and everything is pretty easy to get to. It has helper springs on the front and rear which give it a little lift, and it has 31x10.5x15's under it, so you can crawl under it to do anything you need to.

For cheap, tough/reliable, pre-computer (no EMP) all-terrain (Urban/Rural)...but civilian...I'd go 70's Ford Bronco - many, many good after market suppliers and I found it super tough with excellent underbody strength to handle "hits" off the road; and though it might be blapsphemy: I'd also recommend, and have owned, an old 70's Toyota Lancruiser- I've had a inline 6 (max torque/low speed) model and it is a hill climing/alley traversing champ - just a pain to work the clutch and no power steering; but rugged as all get out.
