SHTF Amphibious Vehicles

I don't plan on using roads if SHTF or any disaster. A large portion of my town was once flooded in 2008. There were sinkholes in the road, houses collapsing into rivers, no city drinking water, flooded basements, and people getting sick from sewers over filling.

Roads were littered with flooded cars. Cars blocking roads. I can't rely on roads or even solid ground, but I want the capability to use them. That means no bridges.

I have decided a good BOV for me is amphibious. So far I have looked at airboats that have freewheel tracks or wheels, and the Argo utility vehicles.

What kind of ideas to you guys have to optimize the amphibious airboat, argo UTV, or some other amphibious vehicle platform that is reasonably attainable?

Any commercial amphibian is going to be either tiny (Argo) or expensive (DUKW).

I plan to build my own amphibious capability. A fairly simple folding barge trailer. Using this concept: http://www.yacht-sale.com/myark barges.htm

I would make it double ended, with a tow bar and running lights at each end. And, besides the folding panels, I would add folding or removable ramps at each end. That way it could be set from one side of a stream and recovered from the other when using as a low water bridge. Would only need a pair of outboards on one end, since if you are on open water, the barge can travel any direction.

Just my opinion.

whatever you decide, don't get an army surplus Gamma Goat. saw one on ebay for sale. they don't swim well at all. lost a couple in Panama with waves less than a foot high. not nearly enough freeboard for their weight.

As a kid I got to sit in the Half-Safe a WWII vintage modified amphibious Jeep that went around the world. A friend of my Dad's was storing for the owner after the trip and we were invited to see it and view a documentary movie about it. The Half-Safe is now on display in Perth, Australia.

As someone that lives in an area that gets floods every few years I can say this would be a far better option than trying to drive thru flood water. On the plus side you also got a boat for when its not need as a BOV, you might even be able to avoid boat ramp fees:thumb:

None of the vehicles the OP mentions are much good for bugging out beyond a SHORT distance. Plus as far as I know (could be wrong) they have very little in the way of load capacity.

Now if the need is to simply move around his flooded town then they could work BUT a small boat would be MUCH more cost effective.
