Hey guys im new here and now that I have a little girl I have really started to prepare just in case SHTF. I have most of the basic survival stuff. I burried a 20ft storage container in the ground that doubles as my storm shelter and storage. I have alot of caned food and non perishable foods and water. I also have a safe thats welded to the wall and I keep a few guns, ammo, gas masks, ETC but I wanted you guys thoughts on a few things if yall have the time.

Here is a list of my guns:
glock 40
keltec p32
s&w sigma 40 cal
243 savage (varmit rifle)
25-06 deer rifle (old but good)
crappy 380 larson (I would sell it but its worthless)
old 16 gauge pump 20" barrell
marlin papose screw in barrel 22cal
benelli 12gauge sporting clays gun
Mossberg 20gauge sawed off to 18"

I have been looking at a few diff weapons but would like to know pros and cons from some people that have a 1911 45cal and a ar15. I have a few good pistols but have always wanted a colt 1911 (my name is colt by the way) I went and looked at a few diff ar's today but wanted to think about it overnight before I made a purchase. I looked at a bushmaster and a rockriver arms ar. I would like for one of you guys to chime in and let me know which one might be a better gun to have the large cal pistol or the assualt rifle. Im young and and would like some wisdom thrown infront of my to help me make a wise choice. Thanks guys....

It all depends on what you have planned for it... I think a person should have both, but thats just me

Looking at what you have I would buy a rifle first. Be it the AR/similar or even an AK. Then buy the 1911. You have a couple of pistols, but nothing capable of sustained fire in a long gun.

If you must buy one of the two, get an AR. You already have most areas of need covered with the guns you already own.

I'd get the AR first. You already seem to have the pistol areas covered.

The .40 is definately a man stopper and is the same caliber that 60% of the police use plus all of the homeland security dept. That round isn't going away anytime soon.

You can also get a conversion bbl for the Glock in .357 Sig and 9mm from www.lonewolfdist.com that would give you many more options.

Right now the 1911s seem to be quite overpriced so that is also a drawback. ARs seem to be dropping in price already and you can build one yourself for 1/2 the price. The 25-06 is a great round but it'll be hard to find after TSHTF.

out of all the stuff on your list, keep the Glock 40, the P32, the 243, the Benelli and the .22. Sell the rest and buy a M1A or AR, whichever you prefer.

Agreed about the 1911...not the most economical for a survival situation. If you are a regular shooter, it's a different story.

Remember that in a firefight, your pistol is your tool to get to your rifle. Like Stant says, get a DoubleStar from budsgunshop for $699, then a used handgun for around $4-500 (check out summitgunbroker.com).

Get a rifle. Maybe sell one of the bolt guns and the 16 gauge If you're not using it much. Possibly trade the .243 in for a .223 back-up bolt gun. 25-06 is awesome for deer and black bears.

I still carry a 1911 and consider it a very practical sidearm. It has many advantages for a pistol. However I do agree that the carbine is a better choice given the circumstances outlined by the original post.

Go with the AR first then get the 1911. My AR is a DMPS, This is a good weapon can not be convereted to select so you wouldn't have any problems with atf. Overall it's a fine gun.

I wonder what kind of run (and therefore shortage) on 1911s we'll see next year, on the 100th anniversary... 2011 !!

Dont you just know every handgun mag and gun blog will be heaping praise on the old warhorse, we may see quite a spike in demand.

And regarding the original poster's question, I agree with the others, an AR-15 would be the logical choice for you. With your Glock, you've got a reasonable sidearm, whereas you seem to be missing the volume of firepower an AR can provide.

I must disagree with you. I think the better trigger, external safety, ergonomics are all advantages for the 1911. The glock is a very good sidearm, but it does have disadvantages depending on your circumstances. Not everybody has the handsize to handle the glock, even with the sf model. Also the 1911 is a little easier to conceal as it is slimmer in most cases(if you consider the para ordinance double stacks they may be about the same). Both pistols are good choices depending on your situation.

I decided to go with the AR. I got a dpms ar and like it alot. Ive only had it for two days now but I love it. It came with a hard case cleaning kit and two 30rd clips so I think it was a good deal. I dont really want to sell any of my guns. I will start saving for a 1911 now that I have the ar. Also I just bought the 22 conversion from dpms but its not here yet. I think after the 1911 im going to get a remington 700 308

I agree... I don't get the fascination with the 1911... sure its a classic, customizable and very nice looking. But I can get 2-3 glocks with mags for the price of a nice 1911.
