Short Hair and SHTF

Anyone give thought to short hair and SHTF. Obviously the Military has known the many benefits of short hair for thousands of years.

What hair I have left I keep short. I cut my own hair with an electric razor,(also saves time and money). If SHTF, I have a generator, as well as, a straight razor and strop that I can use.

Mine is always short, so it is always ready for easier wound treatment, cleanliness, etc.

Any Comments?

I am a girl, but because everyone says it looks really good on me, I wear my hair really short. The money I save on haircuts and products, lets me spend more time and money on skin care. Skin is the bodies first line of defense. Hair, not a big deal. BTW I found non-electric, manual clippers from old barbershop on EBAY, hardly used. It's not the best haircut, but for SHTF I think it will be just great.

I've worn mine short for years. And if SHTF I'd probably try to keep it trimmed down just for convenience sake. But I'm not sure it makes much of a diff in long term survival. In fact, having longer hair would keep the head warmer in cold climes, or keep the sun off the head and shoulders in desert climes.

That said... I'll keep mine short! :)

With a good set of stones, a Kabar gives a nice clean shave. This is especially so for head hair as it is softer and easier to cut. In SHTF, I may do that...but then the crazy wild man look sort of appeals to me too.

Either way, I have the tools to do whatever I want now, thats what counts.

I've gone through periods of life where I either kept it high and tight or have had it down into my mid back, but my preference is keeping it short.

A good pair of scissors and a comb is what you'll need to keep it short, both are low tech and simple to use.

Hair length has not been regulated by the military for thousands of years. An examination of hisotrical images reveals all sorts of hippy looking longhairs. However, during World War I the necssity to wear gas masks and achieve a proper seal, as well as the "cootie" problem from living in unsanitary conditions for extended periods made it necessary.

My wife cuts my hair like she did when I was in the military. Because she likes it that way. In colder climates long hair could be an advantage. The OP is right on from the hygeine and wound care perspective.

I wouldn't run a generator simply to cut my hair, but scissors and razors will have value beyond vanity PSHTF.

Here's a off-the-wall-fact. Templars had regulations dictating that their members had to have short hair, during a time when the majority of men wore their hair long. So perhaps this has something to do with the history of military hair cuts.

The reason for this was the nature of helmets and chain mail did not do well with longer hair.

On the other hand, they promoted beards. Go figure.

As for me being a woman, I will wear my hair long and tied up in all sorts of braids. I'm not cutting my hair for any apocalyptic event. ;)
