Seems like underground would be way more expensive...all we have at mine is a nice trailer, and a seperate open air building with stove, sink, little refrigerator, underground propane tank, well, and tables. I don't know how prepared you wanna be though. I'm pretty sure I won't have to fight off a huge assault, just survive, but if you figure your gonna have to do some scrappin' , then underground might be your best bet.

I know underground would be the best but the woods are so thick, anyone would haft to really go out of their way to find me. I found a spot where a dam must have leeked once. There's about a 20 foot round hole in the ground. I thought about building there and covering it up with brush and dirt. The only thing is, I don't know what will happen the next time the pond gets that high.

Do you have hill sides to work with? If you do build into the hillsides and get the good effects of earth sheltering. Cooling and heating costs offset building cost. Also cutting into a hillside is not nearly as expensive as a straight down dig. Much of the work can be done with a front scoop. Your concrete should be coated with Tar for best waterproofing. Always do an underlay water barrier under your floor as well. Put in french drains around the base to take off excess water as well. Think like you are building a basement with a walk out. Put your water tanks higher so you can use gravity flow. Move downhill for your septic.

Be interested in how it goes, as long as you don't compromise security.

Um, could someone tell me about the plans to build in the trees? Tree houses? Got to admit it sounds cool.:thumb:

Would building in the trees make it possible to conceal the place from casual observation?

Would building in the trees give a tactical advantage if you had to shoot it out with zombies, assuming the zombies have guns and know how to use them?

Tell us about the advantages you saw when considering building in the trees, please.

In the trees is cool but what if you have to get away from fallout then in the ground might be the best place. Mangyhyena why would you want to build in the trees in Colorado. You know it is colder than a well diggers ass here in the southwest. I own a place in Colorado but I live in Aztec New Mexico. You have so many hills dig in man just pick a dry place in the trees on a hillside with a good view and water close by. What part of Colorado are you in? Remember earth shelter is very warm open to the air is cold very cold. It is dry enough here that you can get away with using alot of cheaper methods of building. Earth filled tires that are cemented together then buried under dirt ect. You always want a back way out.

underground is the way to go. your building cant be seen by air. your items will be stored in a cool, hopefully dry place, that is well hidden. once its in place it can just sit, it doesnt cost extra to keep cool.

i would barry a shipping container they are supose to last 40 yrs. if you do it right and have good drainage it should keep, for at least your life time.

A bloodhound would find you in a matter of minutes, followed by an armed force.

If I had money spend on it? Both. build one that is above ground and have one on the other side of the property bellow ground. I would think it would be adventuress to dig tunnels leading to different vantage points on the property. Get the upper hand. "A bloodhound would find you in a matter of minutes, followed by an armed force." said by Idaho. They'll find you above ground more easily. If they see a house on the property, empty, they would just assume you scrammed. Why would they take hounds all over a property that large just to try and find someone, no offense, not that important to them. Your scent would be all over that place anyways. I'm being sincere when I ask this. Can bloodhounds really smell deep underground? If so maybe you could cover the entrance with door urine or something strong that would throw the scent.
