Seeking lithium battery for Yaesu FT60R

I’m not sure this thing exists, so I’m double checking here. My current battery pack is the NiMH that likely came with this unit, which I bought used. The battery doesn’t hold a charge well and discharges quickly. Based on my research, I’ve learned that old batteries do these things. I’ve looked around and found plenty of replacement NiMH batteries. Some of them are even reasonably priced. I’ve seen a few Li+ batteries on Amazon that claim to be compatible with my HT, but they have mixed reviews and stink of cheap Chinese knockoffs. And Amazon doesn’t vet its sellers, so caveat emptor.

My question is this: is there a lithium battery for this HT? New, not used, and reasonably priced. Please post a link! Or tell me straight if I quest in vain, that I may move on. Thanks!

I have not although I’ve read about them. I wanted a lithium battery because I’ve read that they’re lighter to carry and longer lasting. I may be doomed to a new NiMH though.

My friend has that same radio and says although it's an exceptional radio, the battery life is miserable. He loves it and won't give it up. I believe that his solution was to keep another NIMH handy.
It's the one thing keeping me from buying one. Can't deny that it's a high quality radio though.

Yeah, I like the radio. It’s easy to use and works well. It has more buttons than I know what to do with! But the battery life sucks. Oh well. Learning that what I want isn’t feasible also has value.

You might have a look at Ham Radio Outlet and see if they have anything that you could use. They have replacement batteries, the AA battery pack, and some other accessories. I think their accessories are most, if not all, Yaesu branded. You might find the accessories cheaper somewhere else but I thought it might be worth posting.

Thanks! I have looked there; NiMH are $35 as opposed to $59 on Amazon. If that’s what it is, I’d rather pay a HAM site. Bezos has enough money!

Use a bit of time and do a search for "lithium battery for Yaesu FT60R'. You will find a number of manufacturers/sellers for that battery.
I did that. There isn't. Thanks for the patronizing and useless comment.

I have the same radio with the same question. My answer is stick with the NiMH. A new one will last pretty long on receive. Transmitting is what drains the battery.
Have you tried a AA adapter.. I have one coming for an older Kenwood. Can't say if its going to work. As long as the voltage is the same should be ok.

I have the AA adapter. Low power and short life on alkaline cells.
There are rechargeable lithium AA. I went with eneloop for my rechargeable batteries but there are many choices
That's what I would put in my AA battery pack although the voltage would be lower along with the power. The voltage from 6 AA Eneloops is 7.2 vdc.
the battery life sucks
If the pack is bad, it sucks. A new one is pretty decent.
Those chinesium things have two 18650 cells in them wired in series to get the 7.4 vdc. The problem with any Li battery solution is you will need a charger specific to that battery pack.

BTW, to citykittyatheart, that radio will run off of a 12vdc car adapter. The voltage it displays is 12vdc. What I don't know is if the power output is the same as with the stock battery.

I've toyed with the idea of building my own battery pack using a Lithium Iron Phosphate battery designed for RC cars or other such things. 7.4 vdc ones are available.

What I was getting at is that radio will run off of any 12 volt DC power source. If you have a 12 volt battery of any kind such as a car battery or whatever, you can get a cigarette lighter socket with alligator clips on the other end and plug the adapter into the radio and then the cigarette lighter socket.

Would love to upgrade all of my car/truck/camper/radio batteries, and I haven't gotten terribly deep into the subject, but apparently there is a different charging aspect / algorithm for the battery types. The charging circuits used for NiMH may not be compatible with Li-ion.

Someone smarter here should have better information than I currently do.

I will need a different charger for Li ion than the one that came with the NiMH. There are also other chargers for the NiMH than the one in the box. Yup, lots of options and things to think about.

Here's a pic of the AA cell pack and the stock NIMH pack.

Image

Note the capacity and voltage. 7.2 vdc and 1400 mAh.
Now look at the Eneloop specs.

Same voltage of 7.2vdc when in the AA pack but with 2000 mAh capacity.

This is the option I will be going for. I have the eneloop charger.

Now look at the specs for the lithium ion battery pack.

Image

7.4 vdc and 2200 mAh.

Read the reviews.

If you want to go with other brand NiMH AA cells there are some 2800 mAh ones.

I haven't had a lot of luck with anything but the eneloops.

I have eneloops and a charger for them. Is there a schematic or instructions for making the battery pack? Do I get to disassemble the pack every time I want to charge the eneloops? My battery charger, the MH-C9000, has separate slots for each battery. I have a Brunton battery that I use to charge my tablets with a few different port types.
