We have a local homesteading group we call "Farmies" (it's on FB). We get together about once per month with other local farmers and homesteaders, and some city folk interested in unplugging even just a little. We've covered a lot of topics in past months -- foraging, mushrooming, cooking over wood fires, gasification, solar, sustainable farming and gardening, beekeeping, natural medicines, etc.

Anyway, one of the members owns a couple of local dollar stores. She told my wife to tell me that she got in a bunch of pallets of Eversafe 12-pack boxes of MREs, so I went in and checked them out. They're boxed and look very similar to .MIL MREs, but they're clearly commercial. I have some of the .MIL boxes as well, and there seems to be very little difference in packaging and menu. They're all at or near labeled expiration, but I figured for $18 per box, tax included, I'd snag a partial pallet and stuff them in my nice, cool subterranean lair. I've had MREs that are over 10 years past their EXP date and they tasted just fine, and these being so cheap I figured there's little downside.

I just got them home, so I think I'll crack open a box and compare them to current .MIL MREs and see how they fare. They're all 960-1200 calorie meals, which is similar to the MREs as well.

I'll post some photos shortly. Otherwise, is $18/box ($1.50 each, out-the-door) a good deal?

Not sure I'd eat them but that's cheap barter stock. How much salt, preservatives, high fructose corn syrup and GMO's are in there.
Whachu gots against HFCS and GMOs? You wunna them pinko commie tree-huggin' naturalists?

Great deal you got there!

I bought 10 cases around 10 years ago that were not expired, but not at that price.

I opened a few this year and they were edible, but I prefer the mil grade MRE's for calorie amount and quality. The best thing about Eversafe is that they come in bowl-servings and have heaters. I have a lot that were from the first gulf war era that are still good, except the cheese spread gets a little tangy and dark at times. It's just Cheez Whiz, so what can you expect?

That's a great price for sure if they are still edible.
If those are the ones in a clear plastic outer bag then I think I have one of them.
The variety was less and they lacked the side item in the ones I had. Desert was always a cookie or m&ms. They seemed to not age as well as the real ones.

Might want to try 1 case out first to see the condition if they are near expiration.

MRE's Storage

Meals that have a near expiration date are actually still safe for up to 5 years over the expiration date.

If they are in airtight FOIL pouches, NOT the Plastic ones. If the plastic is Milky colored I would not eat them!! I've had bad MRE's and you don't want them!

Rule of thumb on MRE expiration is FIVE YEARS past the Expiration date.
They will only allow just so much time to pass before they might be sued by a consumer. Good Luck

I'm going to do a three-way test between genuine .MIL MREs, some no-name MREs I got last week from ThatDailyDeal, and these Eversafes. I'm going to try to get it going tonight with photos, etc.
PLEASE! I have been dealing with hi blood pressure and wonder if I can tolerate the sodium level of Mre s .

Actually I'm a well regulated diabetic, HFCS and I don't get along at all.
As a Type II myself, whose main concern is more often avoiding lows than being concerned about highs, I would take just a moment to point out two things.

1) High Fructose Corn Syrup is what tree-huggers call it when they want to scare fools who don't know that it is nothing but SUGAR -- it can be good or bad for anyone depending on the quantity and other factors, but it is still SUGAR and still every bit as "natural" as maple syrup, cane sugar, or any other sugar extracted from a plant.

2) You won't find anything to eat that is grown, farmed, or raised commercially anywhere except the poorest of third world pestholes, that has not been genetically modified in some way. Farmers have been genetically modifying their plants and livestock since long before Gregor Mendel applied some math to the results.

And here you go using logic and facts in a perfectly good panic attack over those evil things.
