Just a short note I would like to share is that our local Sams has never ran out of Beans and Rice (50lb bags), they keep plenty on pallets in the back. Well this past week for what ever reason they sold out of both:thumb:. Maybe people are getting the idea?

The only facts I have that they did run out because of the peeps getting in reality is that the Sams ladies were at my business 2 months ago with a booth trying to sign up employees for the member card. I was kidding around with the 2 older women and they stated that I wouldn't believe the rice and beans that were going out the door on "Flats" meaning flat carts. and no they wasn't restaurant owners, they were regular people she said.

I'm also finding more and more at my job that are doing the same.

I hope that is it but it is more likely that they are keeping smaller amounts in stock. I know my Sam's has made major cuts to inventory and they have a new policy that looks at every item in the store and if it doesn't meet sales expectations they dump it, no matter what it is. They just finished a remodel in which they increased the building size by 25% but have actually reduced the amount of items on hand. More and more, if you want something you have to get it at their online site.

They regularly run out of things like rice, beans, pasta, toilet paper, cleaning supplies, etc. I'd like to think that more people are prepping, but I don't know. I'm more likely to think Sam's is just running a finer line on their inventory.

My city is about 99% Mexican, so beans and rice are huge movers here. That's why I don't normally think much of it when they're out. As fast as they sell here, I don't know if the cashiers here would even notice an increase in sales. Let them run out of tortillas and it would be instant rioting! :

Might be because sam's just started taken goverment food cards (new age food stamps) so a hole new breed of shoppers are now shopping there. My mom works for our local sams and many a things have changed in past 6 months

I will keep a heads up on Sams for the next months I'm sure. I'll see whats going on. But I do know atleast 50 people in my area have started doing this in a major way.

Like for example. I saw a generator for sale in someones front yard Sunday so I talked to the owner. This is a very expensive house in this area. The guy said he had 2 of the same and was selling them becuase he bought a huge one that he had directly wired in to his house. I thought " nice ". So then I asked what his reasons was and he said that he doesnt know what the next 3 years hold so he is buying all kinds of stocked food etc... I would never imagined this house was like that. I have friends that own gun/pawn shops and they say its becoming a norm for people to set there and tell him that they are stocking up on everything and he said it was in the hundreds of people.

My local "bulk" dept manager at my local store told me that they just got a memo of an increase on Pinto's, Red beans. Blackeyed peas, and navy bean were going up as of Aug 15th. I forgot to ask about rice, but I will on thursday when I go shopping.

They wouldn't reduce inventory on things that sell big, just on things that don't. It looks promising, that people are finally stocking up.
There has been a lot written and on TV programs, etc, about prepping, and there's also growing bad news everywhere and restlessness and anger. People arn't that dumb they can't see trouble coming.
I think people are stocking up.

COSTCO has mountains of both in Atlanta. So do four different grocery story chains here. There is no shortage.

Walmart/Sams policy is; Off the truck, on the self, out the door. They want zero backstock because they dont want to pay someone to restock a shelf during the day.

Ive seen two instances of people buying huge amounts of dry foods over the past 2 years.

I watched a group of several grown men and women systematically clean a local grocery store out of pretty much every can, every bag of rice, every kind of food that could be stored for a decent period of time, in about 2 hours.

The previous day, the same group had spent untold thousands of dollars at the Super WalMart on dry groceries.

They probably spent 25,000 dollars total....

I would say that with just in time delivery of food stuffs, just a 0.5% increase in sales would result in them running out of certain items eventually...

I can tell you that with the "herd mentality" that the more people who notice that Sam's is out of rice and beans, the more people will go out of their way to purchase rice and beans wherever, whenever and at whatever price they can get it for.

I'm jealous that your Sams have beans. Mine stocks 25# bags of rice (I have gotten my share), but I asked about the beans and no go. They used to stock beans in bulk, but the manager said there just wasn't enough demand so they don't carry them any more.

I'll check at the base commissary today and report back this afternoon. I know my j.o.b. has been cutting back inventory and corporate is charging stiff penalties to stores who have too much inventory on hand. It is a cheap way to keep shareholders happy.

They've reduced inventory on pretty much everything. They stock what they figure they'll need. Sometimes they get a buying spree that they don't count on though and they run out of something. They've been doing that for a while now. But they always have it back in stock in a day or two. Walmart is getting bad at it too.

Noticed that on several items in the past few months. Instant coffee was one that I have been looking for the past 6 months. They used to have it always and it was just this last time that they finally had it back in stock. My wife likes a certain brand of juice they have(the name slips me) and she had to drink another brand till it was back in stock for a few months (waaa) Also certain frozen items come and go. Cereals, good luck there, those are hit and miss.

Local military commissary stocks of rice and beans looks plentiful and prices are normal. Manager says on hand quantites are normal as well as demand.:thumb:
