I just reupped my Sams Club card so I have been doing some comparison shopping. I found Table Salt 25lbs for $3.58. This is already for human use, so it might prove a better deal than the water softener salt because it is ready to use.

Sounds like a good deal. Have you considered using sea salt? Its a bit more expensive, but the health benefits are pretty substantial. Now that you have a good amount of table salt, perhaps you can start adding a little bit of sea salt to your food stores incrementally.

You may want to grab a bag or two- and then seal them in the super huge ziploc storage bags. They should contain iodine, which is required. I see Sapper's comments, and use sea salt occasionally, but in a SHTF situation remember this:

Salt can be used for alot of other purposes- preservation but also for melting ice, as well as (in a pinch)- putting out fires, added to animal feed, etc.

'Course, if you're Roman...remember Carthage? ;-)

if you spread salt in someone's garden, nobody will be able to grow anything in that garden. It was done many times in ancient times and still nothing grows in those places.

The only way that I know to keep food fresh is to rub a lot of salt in it (for example meat). Later just cut off layer with salt.
