A box of Heters ammo just about blew up my friend's FAL. 1 rnd was fine, second smoked heavily (later found the base was split circumfrentially), third blew bolt open and the floorplate out of the magazine.

HERTER'S has a Ulanovsk headstamp, the same as TULA, TULAMMO, WOLF AND THE WHITE BOXED "HUNTING CARTRIDGES"!!! DSA has warnings against using ANY russian steel case ammo as well.

Buried among references to FTF's and FTE's i have found similar claims. My friends and i are no longer going to use the stuff, its a little scary when it happens so close to home.

Ive fired close to 1500 rounds of russian surplus ammo with the ulanovsk stamp through my ak. Zero ftf or fte. How old was the ammo and where had it been stored?

less than 1 yr in humidity controlled safe

i do not see time or humidity causing explosive detonation of ammo, lack of Qaulity control is the most likely culprit improper powder chemistry or a hot loaded round.

wanna use it, fine. Im just throwing out the warning.

I think its a bit silly to stop using all Russian ammunition on the basis that 2 rounds did not conform to the normal standards. Get in contact with the manufacturer or retailer and I imagine they may be willing to help.

Thanks to the Obama administration's contracts with Russia to supply ammo to the Afghans, the Russians have been able to modernize and expand their ammo factories considerably. But at times the Russians have also had problems meeting supply quotas and making their shipments. So it wouldn't be a surprise if there quality issues with ammo shipping that might should not of shipped.

I just bought a case of Ulyanovsk ammo 7.62 x 39. It looks identical to the Brown Bear I usually buy. I will watch it though and post if there are any issues with it. I've never had any issue with Brown Bear, and the only issue I've had with Tula 9mm is it jams in knock off, cheap Glock 33 round magazines. I think the problem is combination of loose specs on the mag and ammo and the polymer coating being a bit sticky in the mags compared to brass. But it doesn't fail to fire nor does it explode. The lacquered coated Russian 9mm that sells as Monarch cycles fine in the same mags.

All ammo companies have issues from time to time. If you don't think so. Look in the back of an Amercian Rifleman Magazine and see all the Ammo warnings there by Remington. I shoot a lot of Russian Ammo and have had no issues at all. Check into the issue. Don't just be a chicken little. Find out what the problem is and post the FACTS on that. That will help us more than anything.

I mainly shoot the russian wolf ammo in 45acp, 9mm luger, 9mm makarov, 223 rem and in 7,62x39 russian and never had a problem with it. I been shooting it for many years now. I only lube my semi auto's with moly or you can also use a gun grease too. Bill

i actually only guy ruskie caliber for my eastern block guns... makarov, ak47, ak74, mosin... i have shot some .223 silver bear through my buds AR and didnt have any problems, a bit dirtier perhaps, but that was it.

i have had failures to fire and even seen a squib load come out of american ammo factories but never seen a round loaded so hot it blew out a magazine floorplate. A few more grains and my freind would be buying a new face.

I get Brown Bear laquer coated in the 700rd sealed cans from SGammo.com and not a single FTF from my Arsenal AK. I like it so much I am going to try it in my .308 bolt rifle for plinking. I too agree would of at the squib, however. Your friend probably thought he had to shoot more bullets to clean the first ones out :juggle:.

I've used a little over 8 cases of Wolf in my carbines now with a lot more ready to use. For what I've saved and will save I can buy plenty more carbines, not that I have had any problems with the Wolf ammo yet. And this is just in .223, I buy a lot in 9mm too. I save $75 to $100 per case of ammo by running Wolf in .223.

All manufacturers put out bad ammo from time to time. For heavy users, Wolf saves enough money to replace plenty of parts or firearms for that matter.

I have fired thousands and thousands of rounds of Russian ammo, the only real issues I had were with the Hotshot brand, they weren't ****ting hot shot indeed. It had no consistency, and one round had enough gas to blow the top cover off my AK, I discontinued shooting that crap.

Ive also received American made ammunition with no primer and no flash hole in the brass, fully powdered and bullet loaded. Every one has snafus.

Id be willing to bet the 308 ammo you have is loaded with a 311 bullet, that seams likely to my thinking. Measure the rounds and see, the pressure increase would do that. I also agree contact the manufacture, if there is a problem with an entire lot of ammo they can issue a recall before more people have problems.

I love steel cased cheap stuff, however, I stick to a firearm and cartridge that was specifically desgined to handle steel cased ammunition. The 7.62x39 cartridge is designed with more taper on the case. However, this problem could be one of two things. A squib low power load leaving a barrel obstruction. Or a piece of the unsound old case left in there. when the next round fired, the bolt was forward enough to engage the firing pin disconnect, however the bolt was not sufficiently closed or at all.

Hope he was wearing safety glasses. Hot powder is enough to make you blind.
