i'm new to both this site and to firearms in general and still have sooooooo much to learn, so please be patient!

my primary cc firearm is a ruger lcr .38 special +, but i want to acquire a backup as well.

at this point i've narrowed the search down to a ruger lc9, a ruger lcp, a kimber solo carry, and a kimber super carry ultra+.

there's quite a range of prices for these four guns, so i want to be sure that i'm going to make the best choice!

i've searched the internet on various sites but cannot find any relevant information that is more current than two years ago. much of what i have seen isn't terribly complimentary for kimber, but since that is two year old info i'm wondering if the quality problems have been resolved.

have any of you had recent experience with any of these four guns? if so, can you give me your input?

comments? suggestions? thoughts? thanks!

to play devil's advocate, any gun can be amazing, and any gun can be a POS. I know guys that swear by their Hi-points, and other guys that swear at their Springfields.
My first question would be, how do they feel? I looked high and low for a gun I can carry. Some guns would actually want to turn in my hand. Just how my hands are built. Turns out that the Taurus PT111 is the best one for me. The Springfield XD is close. Held Kimbers, and they just did not feel right.

if I had to place a bet on it.. I'd suggest that your backup gun will likely be the ONLY gun you have on you most of the time...

it comes down to being able to dress around the larger gun, and even a kimber 3inch (I own one) can be a challenge to dress around..as a result, my 380 is my always gun..so I chose to make that one the best I could afford.

the average perp isn't thinking about ballistics when he is confronted by an armed person..he just sees a gun and for all the talk about 40, 45, 10mm...in the end, none of us are willing to stand in front of ANY pistol and get shot to test our opinions.

My primary big guns are a kimber eclipse ultra 3inch and/or a springfield ultra V10 3.25
both are all metal guns so a bit heavier on the hip, but better shooters for me.
my backup/always gun is a colt mustang 380

find a range that rents guns so you can spend time with each..and pick on that fits you best...and don't scrimp on $

I own the LCP and like to carry that during the summer (Light and small, easy to hide) Have fired the Ruger 9, That would be a price pick-up. It goes bang when you want it to. The Kimber Ultra carry is a very good gun with a high price point. Hit what I shot at with it but seemed priced high for me.

Question is kind of an apples and oranges question. Different hand sizes and pocketbooks determine your decision. Good luck. Either way practice and learn to hit what you aim at.

wanted to add a quick perspective on price issue. I mentioned a couple carry guns in a prior post and they are both higher end brands that typically are considered as pricey... But I purchased mine used..and extremely clean.

Kimber Eclipse ultra in original box w/(2) kimber mags, (2) wilson combat mags, in-waistband holster, spare leather mag pouch, all papers, etc like new with the kimber factory upper replacement for the external extractor to internal model $650.

Springfield Ultra V10 3.25 with factory hogue finger grooves and spare mag.. I knew the owner..less than 300 rds on the gun $450.

That put me into both of these all metal 1911 style carry guns for much less than the new retail pricing.

Sig now makes the new rendition of the colt mustang and they can be had new for $500ish. which has helped to pull the prices of the colts back into line.. I paid $450 for my stainless mustang last year and it was basically an unshot gun owned by an elderly gent (who I guess only carried it to church on sunday) gun was in original box with all accessories and spare mag at that price.

so I guess i'm saying I avoided thinking I had to go with a more budget brand in order to get into my price range.

of the budget brands, I will say that I've always had good results from all things Ruger..other brands I shy away from if it's going to be a carry gun... a gun I'm bettin my life on.

For EDC you can't beat the Ruger LCP. Fits in a front pocket E-Z!
For a little more fire power the Ruger LC9 is just a little larger but is a 9mm.
If you could go just a bit larger (compact) the Ruger SR9c is a GREAT gun, 10/17 rounds and very manageable re-coil. (I own all three and the each fit their need and job).
Now the Kimbers are nice (I looked at the Solo for a while) but are pricey,:(

That's how you pick YOUR guns. :thumb:

...and fyi if I was to get a 1911 style for conceal cary, I'd get the springfield emp....it's expensive but awsome...
i'll second that.^^ but really ruger vs. kimber? seems to be a no-brainer to me KIMBER everytime. have you looked at the kahr pm9 ? priced somewhere between the two and a very good quality firearm, smallest 9mm out there i do believe.

I'm always surprised by how few of these threads mention Glock.

The Glock handgun may be uglier than sin and have a funny grip angle, but it'll get the job done like no other. They're very reliable, rust resistant, lightweight, and common. Parts are cheap and plentiful, and they are unbelievably simple to maintain. Parts interchangeability is second to none, and the subcompacts don't compromise functionality for concealibility.

The Glock handgun in 9mm or .40 is the most common SD pistol, and also very widely used by law enforcement and military worldwide. Even if I didn't prefer Glock, I would still own one or two of them for their sheer practicality.

The suggestion of a Kimber for the backup gun of a survivalist would be like suggesting they use a Corvette for their bug out vehicle.

I'm just sayin'.
