At 17.5 oz, and with several good reviews, it would seem to be
a great BOB pistol. Handy for small game, and as a last ditch effort for
self defense. In addition to that it is double action on the first shot.
Which is a great safety feature in my opinion. When it comes to guns
and survival my first rule is - don't shoot yourself. Sounds obvious, but yet
there is a long list of people who have shot themselves while drawing a single
action weapon. Or a striker fired weapon. Look at the bad experience that the New York Cops had when they first got their Glocks. Now they have Glocks with 11 lb triggers, (the New York trigger) and their ADs have dropped off.

In addition to all that the adds are all over this site...
but yet I'm the first one to post ?????
I don't get it.

I have a Buckmark with a lightweight barrel, but at 28oz it's still 10.5oz
heavier than the SR 22. That's nothing at the range, but if you had to carry
10 extra oz all day it would add up. Put 10 silver eagles in your pocket and you will probably agree that it is a noticeable lump.

I'm real serious about getting one. I'm just looking for one that is reasonably
priced. My local gun store wants $395, which is $75 over what others on the crazy old inter-webs report paying.

I would appreciate any real world experience that you are willing to share.

Thanks

Baja, I was seriously about to post something about this pistol too! It looks like an awesome gun, from what I have seen it is very reliable and will eat any type of 22lr ammo you feed it. That is critical for a survival gun where consistent ammo could be few and far between. Similar styles of pistol (Walther) are very finicky on what types of ammo it will eat. I understand that this is a 10+1 gun, but I would have liked to seen something with a little more capacity for a 22. I saw this pistol put 10 rounds in a half dollar offhand at 10yds. Exceptional for a barrel less than 4".

I would love to get a chance to shoot this sweet thing.

I love my LCR .38. But the LCR .22 does not have an adjustable rear sight,
and I prefer more accuracy in a .22

The SR 22 is 2.6oz heavier than the LCR 22, but the sights and semi auto design more than make up for that small negative.

I read an old account of the LA riots where an LAPD detective was chased into an apartment building. He ran out of ammo in his primary and his back up was a snub .22 revolver and a pocket full of ammo. Whenever the thugs would try to advance on him he would empty the gun down the hallway, reload, and repeat to keep them at bay. It worked until the calvary arrived.

Some people have physical maladies that only permit them to carry a .22. I hear everyone bash it, but I have yet to find a volunteer to be shot with one. That being said, I carry a .40S&W :D:

I have done some research about the Ruger Sr22p

Advantages so far I learned about the Sr22p.

Sr22p vs walther p22, sig mosquito

Sr22p is more reliable, significantly less finicky about ammo.

Sr22p vs ruger LCP
the Sr22p has a MUCH lighter trigger pull.

Sr22p vs MKIII and 22/45
Sr22p is much easier to field strip and is less expensive in some places, is also lighter.

I looked at the SR22 and in the end I steered clear. Since you brought Glock into this I'll compare my Glock 26 to the Ruger SR22.

The Glock 26 weighs in at 19.75 ounces. Thats only 2.25 ounces difference.

The Advantages of the Glock:

Glock 26 - 5,000 Ft/LBS of energy on tap per 10 round magazine using +P+ loads.
Ruger SR22 - 750 Ft/LBS of energy on tap per 10 round magazine using the hottest 22lr loads you can buy! The short 3.5 inch barrel is not ideal for 22lr. Standard rounds have 50-60 ft/lbs and 75 is the highest I could find using the hottest loads made for pistols.

The Glock has almost 7 times the damage per 10 round magazine.

Reliability, The SR22 is probably as reliable as you can get for a rim fire auto loader but the Glock still wins hands down.

From most of the reviews the trigger in the SR22 sucks
http://www.thetruthaboutguns.com/2012/03/ralph/gun-review-ruger-sr22/

The Glock also wins in Accuracy so trying to kill small game with the SR22 is not an ideal solution.

The SR22 uses very cheap ammo, costs about $100 less, is slightly lighter and will cause less meat damage hunting small game. But overall I'm not impressed with the SR22.

Another alternative is the much less expensive NAA Magnum Mini Masters or Black Widow with two cylinders. You can buy a tiny NAA that will fire 22 short, 22lr and 22 Magnum all in the same pistol. Total weight 4.5oz to 10.5oz depending on the weapon. As for stopping power you can pick from 25ft/lbs to 150+ ft/lbs with 5 rounds on tap. Overall the NAA costs much less, is smaller, more reliable, can fire up to 1,500 ft/sec ammunition. Has the same "total" energy as the SR22 and is much more concealable. As for killing small game. 5 rounds is plenty before reloading. For humans the 22 "magnum" cylinder has over twice the stopping power of the SR22 at 1/3 to 1/2 the weight. Obviously a 22 Magnum is not ideal for your primary weapon but neither is the SR22.

Don't you hate people that dredge up old threads?

I'm looking for a .22 that my 14yo daughter will feel comfortable shooting. She's petite, small hands, with not a lot of arm strength. My 9 and 45 scare her too much. I get a little scared, too. Not sure she's got a good handle on those. So I'd like her to shoot something so she can become more comfortable with handguns (she's pretty good with a rifle!).

I saw the SR22 in a shop today, guy said they've sold 20+ and haven't had any complaints on them. It's small but i can still comfortably hold it. $359 here in calif.

What's the general consensus around here? Worthwhile gun? Pretty reliable? Shoots any ammo? Reasonably accurate?

Thanks!

I bought one for my wife a some time back. So far it's been great and alot of fun to shoot.

Broke it in using CCI mini-mags and it ate everything we put in it after that. From what I've heard from others it would have ate anything anyway. As for reliable, not had a problem and we've shot numerous bulk packs through it so far. Probably around 600 rounds just in the first week we had id.

Two things to note:

1) Very intolerant to limp-wristing. You will get FTF. When my wife started shooting she had about 1 FTF per mag. Me, none. Now that she's corrected her grip issue, none.

2) Until broken in, trigger is really heavy for some women/younger shooters. Breaks in quickly though.

Accuracy is pretty good considering what it is...a .22 pistol.

I can say that my little SR-22 is a great pack gun, decent accuracy although not on par with target pistols or my Colt Sport Woodsman.

Having said that, it will hammer out 1" groups, probably could do better but the trigger is typical for most modern auto's.

And once it 'ran in', its been very reliable and fairly ammo friendly, although it refuses to run with Federal Auto-Match.

I've sold several to customers that fell in love with mine after test firing it.

Complaints? They can't make them fast enough. And those bloody plastic sights, can't abide them on Glocks and they're too easy to ding up. I'd pay a little more for adjustable sights.

My SR22 has actually been rather picky about ammo, often failing to feed on the second round. Specifically, it doesn't seem to do well with round nose ammo ala Remington Thunderbolt, Winchester Wildcat, etc. Give it some Federal Spitfire, Remington Viper, CCI Mini-mags or the copper-nosed Winchester bulk, and there's no problem at all. On the other hand, my Walther G22 bullpup is the exact opposite as far as what ammo it does and doesn't like.

I love the gun - although getting it the first week they were on the market for $289 didn't hurt - but if you get one, try out a variety of ammo in small quantities before buying a bulk pack only to find out the gun doesn't like it.

Love my SR22. Have noticed the Federal bulk box from Waltucky has hot and cold loaded rounds, and the cold rounds occasionally do not cycle the gun. You can feel it when you shoot a cold load.

I suggest using good ammo in it, at least something that will cycle the action reliably every time.

I've put probably 1000 rounds through mine. So much fun at the range, and lots of people always come up and ask about it.

Too short for us Canucks...can't get em...

Paid $289 for my SR22. No complaints,I bought it for a lightweight pistol for my BOB. I also have a Ruger 22/45 with a PacLite threaded upper but find the SR22 is a better pocket gun. Just found out Ruger is getting ready to sell a threaded barrel for the SR22 which makes me like my SR22 even more, since I will be able to use my can with it.

Yea I bought my SR22 a few months back for 2 reasons. 1. I was a replacement for a Walther p-22 I sold last year. 2. Its a Ruger... So far it has fired every type amo I shove at it without a problem. Great gun, nice price point, easy to carry. Win Win Win!

Paid 325 two weeks ago at the LGS.

Been flawless so far with 500 rounds of misc 22lr. Eley, Wolf, RWS match along with Federal HP bulk, and Federal auto match.

The only problems I've had so far is it won't work too well with 22 longs. I have a bunch of CCI longs I thought I'd give them a try. I would cycle about 70% of the 3 or 4 mags I run in it. Not bad considering.

Feed mine good stuff and it's perfect...not as easy to shoot accurately as my MKII but still pretty good.

I think I've found my new hunting buddy to replace carrying my 9c or 229. I love this little pistol, we'll probably pick up one for the wife soon (before election time) she loves the little thing also.

Oh and Ruger is made by Ruger not rebadged p22's
