I'm considering acquiring a Ruger 10/22 Takedown. I would appreciate opinions on whether this is a decent rifle, or if anyone has had problems with it. It appears to be a rifle that would suit my needs well, if it is a reliable weapon and not prone to problems.

I have one. I love it. It runs flawlessly just as any other Ruger 10/22. The bag holds plenty. I keep it with me in my vehicle. I have it setup as my ghb.

On a side note I'm about to get the Ruger Takedown Charger in all back. It's sweet as well. Just building funds up.

"Flawlessly just as " Hardly. I just purchased a 2nd Ed Collectors 10/22 as wants peep sights for an Appleseed rifle. Very disappointed. The peep sights are only one step up from junk (long allen wrench to adjust), mag well is so tight have to push the mag with a finger thru the ejection port, and the front sight fell out of the dovetail before the rifle had been fired.

I have several other Ruger (incl a SS 10/22) but really reduced my previous high opinion of the brand.

I don't have a breakdown- though I want one too.

I have a straight one. Happy with everything except the eject lever. Shoots straight. Reliable. Trigger pull is 5lbs or less. Guts get dirty - but .22 rounds aren't clean.

One of my go to guns. Throw it in the mud - pick it up & the damn thing will shoot.

Anything inside 100yds - its deadly. I wouldn't go past 150 with it because of the .22 ballistics.

Guess it depends on your purpose. I like mine - synthetic stock gives me room for a survival kit in the butstock. Works for me. 10,000 rds downrange with that gun & the only problems I've ever had were due to bad ammo. Don't feed it Remington- 3 out of 10 were duds. Not the gun though.

I'd get one for either a GHB or just to pack under your seat.

I have a Ruger 10/22 TD and Love this gun. Shoots everything I've put through it. only jams I've ever had is with Rem Golden Bullets, which is sucky ammo anyway. I put mine in a in a Tapco stock and cut it down. I have picks in a thread I started. You wont be disappointed.

Ok, do you have any suggestions as to what I should do with 2000 rounds of Rem Golden Bullets that my semi-auto pistol chokes on too? I was hoping to get a rifle that would shoot them. But I really want THIS rifle. Perhaps I should add a .22 revolver. Maybe I should save the ammo for barter.

I bought one just after they were introduced. I sold it a year later. Nice enough gun but I found that I did not care that much for it. It shot good and was reasonably accurate. The trigger was lousy. The take down approach was novel but since I do not travel much completely unnecessary for me. I also am not a fan of semis. Every time I get one I find myself not liking them after awhile.

Shot the 2000 rounds through it, but crappy ammo is crappy ammo. I use the Rem bullets as plinking / training ammo for my kids. if it jams/doesn't feed, I use it as a training exerciseon how to clear the weapon so they get used to it. the TD is very easy to clean. Get a bore snake for it zip zip and done. When / If you get a TD make sure when you but it together the bolt is locked back. same for when you break it down. Make sure the barrel fits tight for best accuracy.

I like it but it feels a little toy like with all the polymer. No major issue out of the box, was shooting a bit to the left with the "iron" sights. (they are pretty much plastic). The bolt release was sticky out of the box, but eased up over time.

It's kind of a luxury item, I'll pick up a classic wood stock one at some point soon and will probably shoot that more often.

What kind of ammo do you feed it? Have you tried different kinds, and does it like some better than others?
Put mostly plinking ammo through it, Remington & Winchester. Some FTF with the Remington Thunderbolt but that is to be expected.

The only downside I can think of is a limited availability of the aftermarket stocks compared to the regular stock 10/22's. I am happy with the factory one, so it's not a problem to me.

Also, mine has occasional jamming issues with Remington Yellow Jackets.

This is my favorite rifle and I will never sell it. In fact, I want to get another one. Mine is a SS with black stock. I am considering a blued with a threaded barrel and a camo stock.

Hope it helps.

When we sponsor our "Women on Target" safety class's -- sometimes they bring their own .22's -- as a safety check I unload a full mag --

Even though the take-down isn't that old to begin with ---- 99% of the time they're brand new right out of the box ---- and out of 50 ? I've tried --- they all worked flawlessly :thumb:

Good to go. I sold my regular 10/22 and rolled the money into the takedown. No regrets. Rifle is totally reliable. I have over a 1000 rounds through mine and no hick ups. I added tech sights, a trs 25 and laser max. It is as " tacticool" as I need it to be and its awesome.

I bought the first one I saw. Already had a threaded muzzle, so I added a muffler to the bag as well as a VX1 2-7 scope. That and a toothbrush are in my Minimum Essentials G.O.O.D. kit. Every time I take it to the range I like it better.

I like mine but it isnt super accurate. It is pretty good, but I have another 10/22 that shoots holes in holes at 25 yards. I can score marksman on an appleseed target with it though.

It comes with a bag that most scopes wont fit while mounted. One scope that does fit is the leupold 2-7x - 28mm

The wife and I have the following Takedown models now.

1 blued steel non threaded bbl
1 ss steel non threaded
2 blued steel factory threaded
3 ss steel factory threaded

2 of them have over 5k documented rds. Everything from high/ hyper velocity to std/ subsonic velocity. No issues and I expect them to be just as reliable as my older 1022 rifles with well over 50k rds. ( The takedown types seem to be a bit more accurate than my older models so far)
( My clan likes to shoot alot)
