It has been a bit over two months since I started training for hiking a portion of the Appalacian Trail (200 miles in North Carolina/North Georgia for 10-12 days) in October, and I decided to chart my progress on this thread since I don't really talk about this with anyone in my life, and it's nice to revel in progress.

I have increased my workout regiment from leasurely walking 2 miles a day in early April to walking 3.5 miles a day by the end of April, 5-6 days a week. I use a treadmill, a hiking pack, and hand weights.

In May, I increased the distance I walk to 5-6 miles, I increased the weight in my pack, and the incline I walk to 5% walking 10 days at a time.

And in June I have increased that to 8 miles a day as of four days ago. Last night I walked 8.32 miles in 118 minutes at 4.2 mph with a 25lbs pack, although I have dropped down to 6 days a week again.

I expect to reach 9 miles a day in July, and by August, and through September, I will be walking 10 miles a day, for 150 minutes, roughly 6 days a week, although that may have to come down to five days a week as I am finding it increasingly difficult to maintain body weight.

I am 5'10 and was 170lbs to begin with. I was lean, but with a bit of a gut from sitting all day at my job. The last two months, my weight fell to 162 before gaining back to 170 from gained muscle mass, and then falling again to 166-167 currently. My waist has decreased from a tight 32 to around a loose 31... I toy with adding situps and training to get a sixpack, but I'm exhausted after walking, and I currently don't have the will to workout 3 hours a day. Maybe later... Ideally I'd like to increase my muscle mass to 175-180lbs...we'll see how that goes.

The hardest part for me has been increasing my caloric intake to make up for the thousands of calories I burn each day. I eat extra meals, take vitamins, and take dietary supplements like 'ensure...' I consider taking creatine.

I have developed a few blisters on my feet, and have successfully nursed them, keeping them from becoming too painful or from keeping me from working out on my schedule. (There are these great bandaids made specially for blisters...) I have also had a few 'rough patches' of skin develope in places where I have some friction from my clothing on my thighs and biceps. In addition, I do laundry almost daily due to the fact that you could wring out my clothing after my workouts each day.

Although, I have noticed positives in my energy levels each day. My legs are pretty sore, daily, but not painfully. My calves are like rocks, though, and my butt is pretty solid too. (My GF says my butt looks better. For what that's worth...)

All in all, I'm coming into focus, and am looking to test myself out with my gear. I was supposed to go hiking on the 11th, but my GF was feeling sick so I stayed home with her (It stormed-hailed!-anyway), this weekend I had family obligations, so weather permitting, I will attempt a hike in Ocala, or Sarasota on the weekend of the 25th, if it storms, then July 2nd and 3rd... Maybe later I will post my daily progress.

Once I finally make it outdoors, I will post pics, and show-and-tell my hiking gear.

I generally watch a movie every day, and decided when I started this, that the time I spent sitting on my arse would be better spent walking. I document almost everything I do in a journal, so I will also list the movies that I watched as I walked

Slacked all weekend. It rained Saturday and Sunday pretty hard, and I couldn't get motivated to do much of anything. In a word I was lazy. Friday I rested, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. It was the longest stretch I've gone since April without walking. I felt really guilty.

But, today, I'm out of the funk, I did 9 miles and change. I clumsily pressed a button that erased my caloric progress from the screen on the treadmill when I was almost finished, so I'll have to walk for the same amount of time tomorrow to chart the progress accurately.

I walked for 130 minutes at 4.2 mph at a 5.0 incline with 25lbs on my back.

Now if I can keep this up, and get outdoors for a hike, I'll be back on track.

Edit: 06/28: 9.10 miles - 1894 calories - 5.0 incline - 4.2 mph - 130 minutes - 25 lbs pack weight

 I occationally wear the full pack weight around the house to feel it out. At 45 lbs with 2/3 days worth of water, my tent, my sleeping bag/pack/pillow two changes of clothes, mess kit, a tripod stool, food, and little things like a compass, a small mace spray, oh, and my sven saw... it's pretty heavy, but not impossible by any means. My pack is an REI 85 xt. I have zero complaints. http://reviews.rei.com/review/795524/REI-XT-85-Pack

Today was effortless. I even felt good getting out of the shower... and I have to admit I look better than I did just two months ago. I have gotten a couple compliments about my general build lately as well. It's weird. I thought I would be forcing myself to go on about now, but it's just the opposite. I naturally feel bad when I don't walk. The pack has made my back strong, and my shoulders. The hand weights I use have started to define my arms too. I'm glad I began this.

Yesterday was a disaster. I spent 1 1/2 hours in traffic on the way home from work. By the time I made it home, it was too late to work out, I was exhausted, hungry and angry. Oh well, can't fight the Universe. Hopefully nothing prevents me tonight.

kudos to you for training.
I never trained for my AT hike. My first 100-200 miles made my legs hurt some, after that my body adapted.

LOVED the journey!

My only tips... Soft toilet paper, eat 2 packs of mustard for leg cramps, and buy shoes with REALLY GOOD ankle support!

Here, I think, I will stay for a while. 5 days a week; 50 miles a week. Eventually I'll add to the pack weight, but the speed I move at may hinder further weight at this point, and there is no way I can walk for 3-4 hours a day, nor do I wish to. I may mess with my incline, but that seems like the only variation from here on out. It's taken a long time to get here, but I think my incremental approach was the correct one.
