ouch, they want 1300 just for an upper? get a dpms and be done with it.

Ummm...no a complete rifle can be had for around that much.
Never ever go by MSRP in most cases.
I've got the standard flat top LAR-8 cabine in .308, before the Elite Operator came out by a couple of months.
My only complaint is the days of cheap but good condition FAL or L1A1 mags are about gone. Hand select when possible.
Other than that it shoots like a dream.

DPMS
I have two DPMS's in 7.62 the LR308C and the AP4 with an ACOG. I have over 3000 rounds down the tube with the LR 308C with no major malfunctions except for ammo once in a while. I only have about 2000 rounds on the AP4, my favorite, and same results. I just couldn't see paying $1500 plus for anything else.
