I have been looking at picking up a new handgun and have been drawn to the Armscor Rock Island Armory 1911 9mm & 22TCM.

I have had a 9mm before but it was a CC type and I have bear paws for hands and ended up selling it to pick up a 1911 22. I love the feel of the 1911's and with the option to fire an over kill 22 or 9mm it's like a 2 for one deal plus 17rnds to boot seems like its a real nice carry sidearm.

My understanding of this puppy has only been from youtube clips. I have not found anyone local who has shot or even held one; and none of my local, nor cabelas, has one for me to look at.

My questions are for anyone in here shooting one / shot one and if so what are you thoughts.
Specifically
1) With the 17rd mag is it to wide for comfort for the average person "AE50" feel or just a bit thicker then a regular 1911?

2) When firing the TMC 22rds is it ignorantly loud; to annoying to knock out a box or two of 50rnds?

1) It feels wide to me. All my other 1911's are standard cap ones though.
2) yes, but that's subjective. kinda like a 9mm report.

My suggestion: when you buy it, make a deal with the dealer for a case of ammo. I worked out a deal for about $22/box. I say this, as RIA is the solitary ammo manufacture at the moment.
3) Check out the .22 TCM rifle

I like mine, but the wide grip throws me off. As you have big mitts, I would imagine there is no problem.

I like the 22TCM concept because in a way it is the reverse of the 5.56/300AAC. But as Lylac Krazy said RIA is the only ammo manufacturer. I'd buy whatever amount of ammo you think you will shoot in a lifetime an a half. This round has been around a while and hasn't really caught on so...... I think it might become a dead cartridge. But if it does the gun is still perfectly useful because of the 9mm so all you've lost is the price of the barrel.

Well I bought one just need to have it sent to me now... Can not wait to pop off a few rounds.
As for the brass, I have seen people cut and neck down .223 shells for reloads. This was one of the reasons I wanted the platform. The dies are pricey over the stock dies but I shoot .223 so WCS I could do the same

Update:
I got my 1911 last week and is it beautiful! Still waiting on the TCM22 ammo from the same guy; that said the 9mm setup is fun and the original configuration I was looking for. The double stack and TCM configurations are just pluses for me.
However, I find myself going crazy waiting for the TCM ammo, so much so, I ordered another 500 rounds from CTD ;) they may even arrive before the ones from the original seller! I did ask my club if the gun can be used in the indoor range and they said no so I will be stuck to the 8-8 out door ranges.

If you have a good "in" with your LGS, he may order it for you near cost.
Mine will do that for me, with the wildcat calibers I like to shoot. Of course, he has my loyalty when I buy firearms.
Alternately, you can also locate a dealer that stocks lots of RIA stuff and get the ammo there.

I have NOT put the 9mm barrel in yet, did you change the extractor when you did? I was curious, as the manual says to change it out.

I had the RIA 1911 GI model. It wasn't a bad gun, although it was extremely out of spec. Took a lot more work than it should have to replace the grip safety. Cool thing is that you can buy a .38 super barrel for it and go to town.

1) Who's LGS?
2) yes on the extractor UNLESS you have a "select grade" then you leave the TCM extractor in and just do the spring and barrel.
3) I ordered 500rnd, 2 days after warlord finally shipped the ammo, from CTD and got them in on the same day as the ammo from warlord.

FYI
Damn this ammo screams! 1/4" steal plate vs 9mm micro dent vs TCM big dent and 50-75% penetration

You can dump the whole mag on target as fast as you can pull the trigger

This thread got me interested in the 22TCM and getting a conversion barrel for my glock. I sent an email to RIA about making a Glock conversion barrel. They replied that the designer of the cartridge was working with a company called Warlord Arms on bringing it to market. RIA provided me an email address to contact them at and when I sent them an email I didn't get a response and I send it on 3/19/14.

Some further research yielded that the current 22TCM offerings won't fit in a Glock 9mm Magazine due to OAL issues. I'm guessing this is why the designer of the cartridge was working with the company. I hope this comes to fruition.

If you are looking for a double stack 1911 in 9mm for a little more I would say jump all over one of these guys. The gun is well build everything fits well and I have to say the 22TCM platform is one of the most enjoyable so far for me. I find the only problem is the ammo goes way to fast and you still have a strong desire to keep on shooting ;). I would recommend the RIA TCM22 to anyone for pure shooting fun! It would not be my first choice as a home defense gun where the flash and sound are over the top; it would do the trick if you needed it but your hearing would pay the price for a few days at the least.

I have already added HOGUE 14000 grips tweaked to fit just right and 2 new Mec-Gar P18 magazines (trimmed the feed lips back like the factory mags 30 seconds on a grinding wheel and a bit of clean up with some micro files.)
