Neil Ferguson says we're consistently seeing about 3k new cases a day for the simple reason that China cannot test any faster than that. He says the true growth of infections is likely far higher--50k per day.

They could, but the researcher is talking about confirmed cases. The trouble with the WuFlu is that the symptoms initially are a lot like so many other infections' symptoms.

Although, with how contagious it is, you're probably right...just reporting suspected cases might have an accuracy of ~90% at least in China, anyway.

I always wondered why a modern technological nation still believes such nonsense.

It's so normal for China to control a narrative, you'd have to be naive to think that we're getting the true picture about such a big and potentially embarrassing or damaging story as the virus.

And even if you just look at what the news is reporting, there's plenty to be concerned about and to draw inferences from. Just the school closings, workplaces closed, and other restrictions are very unprecedented, a very big deal.

It all doesn't necessarily mean that The Stand is coming to the USA, I suppose, but it does probably mean that China has discovered that the Wuhan virus is a very big threat, imo.

A lot of people in China are afraid to go to a hospital for fear that, if they are not ill, they will become more ill if they go - or just get sick! This is doubly true when a lot of people are ill - the hospitals can look like Disneyland on a hot July day, which would make even a simple cold spread like wild fire. Almost every drug store in China offers free "medical advice" about which medicine to take for what symptoms. This could also be siphoning off the actual count. And then add the fact that many nuclear families of 3 have in-laws living with them. In more remote areas, maybe 8 or more people live in the same house. Some places have common toileting facilities...almost all people live in 7 story (or taller) apartment buildings. When you start squeezing people in and stacking one on top of another, things like this can get out of hand quickly.

NO government is going to tell the populace the "truth"... it's not in the best economic interest of any government to do so....

• There is no vaccine.
• The virus is airborne and asymptomatically transmissible. It's going EVERYWHERE... there is no stopping it.
• The only treatment solution is supportive care and anti-viral cocktails, and there isn't enough of that to cover what appears to be the virus' exponential infection rate.

The Chinese have a huge investment in Ethiopia... The WHO's Dir General is from Ethiopia. Given the Chinese obvious willingness to lie about their own data... whats the logical likelihood they'd try to influence the WHO on their messaging???
