I am going to purchase a few rifles & shotguns very shortly for myself & my wife. We have a limited budget to work with so I have to go with what we can afford. We are looking at a 7mm-08 for my wife & a 270 for myself.

Here is the issue, Its basically come down to 2 models.
the Remington 770 and the Mossberg 4x4. Both come with scopes and a reasonable price. (although I am not sure the mossberg comes in a 7mm-08).

Does anyone have any experience with these 2 rifles? Are they decent or trouble laden? I would appreciate any input you can offer.

(we are also going with the Mossberg shotguns - either the Mav 88 or 500.)

I personally haven't had any experience with either but i have heard some troubling things from the 770 rem. I know a guy that got his son the mossberg 4x4 and has had no problems out of it. You might want to look into the savage rifles. they are very affordable and are very good. I got the one pictured in my avatar for around 380.00 in the rem 7mmMAG. they offer it in a variety of calibers. If you are just limited to the two above mentioned rifles i would go with the mossberg. just my 2 cents, hopes this helps later.

for another 100 you can get the rem 700 and have a rifle that will last the rest of your life. as for the other two you mentioned I think the mossie offers more for the price range including a free floated barrel

One good rifle is better than 2 so so ones. I would stick to 308 over 270 or 7mm-08 do to ammo prices. A good used gun can save lots of money and provide a lifetime of service.
Just my thoughts.

You might want to consider a Savage 110 as well. My friend has one that's been trouble free.

Both Great Guns

I've owned both the Remington 870 Express and the Mossberg 500. I love my Mossberg, it's like a close companion to me in the woods.

I have heard nothing but good things about the Remington as well and I never had a problem with it, but the throw on it was a little off for me and the Mossberg just fit better.

My Uncle and hunting buddies swear by their 870s and we have all put a lot of rounds through these guns without fault. I don't think you can go wrong either way.
