I was at the gun store today looking at 30-06/ .308's around $300. Several posters had recommended the Savage 110 here on the board. As I was telling the guy behind the counter what I was looking for, he immediately went and grabbed a late 1980's Remington Model 78 Sportster. I was not familiar with the Model 78 and he explained that it was the poor man's 700. Same trigger etc. with cheaper stock and barrel.

The asking price was $299 with Leopold base and rings but no scope. It felt really good, especially compared to the Savage 110's that I looked at.

Is anyone familiar with the 78? Is this a good deal?

The Sportsman 78's were a very good rifle, no frills but the same barrel, trigger and action as the 700's. Cheaper wood and less polish are the big differences.

For the money you could do a lot worse. And considering it's got $40-50 in mounts/rings on top not bad at all.
If I were looking for another hunting rig, I'd grab it at that price.
