I bought a few cans of the Red Feather butter and opened one to try.

It is delicious!

Before I re-order any more, I'd like to hear from those who have stored it, and how you stored it to consider how well it holds up over time.

Also, if anyone has experience with the canned Bega cheese as well, I'm all ears.

Is this the powdered butter or does it come straight out of the can as fresh butter? I can't believe long term canning would be good with all that water in it.

This is pure canned butter in a metal can, not in a powdered form.

Some of the websites are saying at least a 2-year shelf life.

I was hoping that someone on these forums may have actually stored it longer and then tried some, as a test.

Of course, storage conditions could vary widely, so that is an important consideration as well.

I have heard that the Bega canned cheese is supposed to have a 10-15 year or "indefinite" (whatever that means, lol) shelf life, so I figure it is conceivable that a butter product may as well, right?

But before I spend any more money, I wanted to ask here :)


Is this the powdered butter or does it come straight out of the can as fresh butter? I can't believe long term canning would be good with all that water in it.

I have two cases of it. Every source I have talked to says it has no expiration date . Kept cool it should last as long as you want it to. Its made in New Zealand. I have not seen an expiration date. On the back it says BU 23 on mine. I take that to mean best used 2023. Ill check it out for you. KF

This is only an indirect answer to your question, but PleasantHillGrain sells canned butter from Holland; from their website:

"Extended shelf life... Because the manufacturer of the empty cans guarantees their cans for two years, the cans bear an expiration date based on two years from the canning date. Nevertheless, the cans are high quality, and experience with top quality canned butter has established that the product consistently lasts far, far longer. Many customers have found the product to have 100% quality well after a decade of room-temperature storage."

Now, it's not Red Feather they're talking about, it's a different brand. However, you have two options here; one is to apply their info to Red Feather, two is to order some of this and see if you like it as well.

Just like our canned cheese, which will store indefinitely, no one knows just how long this canned butter will store. They're telling us "indefinitely." As with any storable food, the cooler you can keep it, the longer it will last on the shelf. (We've eaten it 3-years-old and one of our customers has eaten it 6 years old.) This is the ideal product to store on your boat or yacht to take with you sailing. Or to take with you camping. It's ideal to have on hand to prevent an extra trip to the grocery or corner store when you run out of non-storable butter.

This link is to another canned butter made in Holland. If you read down the description it says indefinite shelf life.

This link says Red Feather has an indefinite shelf life. I did see another saying it had a two year shelf life. In my opinion I am keeping it for long term storage in a constant cool and dry temperature in our basement pantry. I dont think it will go bad in my lifetime. Kingfish

I was searching around on the web looking for the shelf life of Red Feather Canned butter and saw the link to this thread. When I originally bought some of my butter back in 2008 from the vendor, I was told it had an indefinite shelf life. But now, I am not so sure. Emergency Essentials says 2 years. And I also found this:

I don't know but I make my own ghee and can it. I've known it to last for 10 years. Made from butter, tastes like butter only better, and it can also be used for frying.
I have seen canned ghee for sale but never looked into it, isn't it a liquid???
Do you use it for bread? Brushed on??? Sprayed on????

Would like to know cause I heard that does last alot longer than canned butter because the milk fats have been removed, yes???

I have a case of the Bega cheese. It is really good, white and fairly mild.
Great on crackers. It takes a lot of willpower not to open more cans, we have eaten 2 of them. :thumb:

However, I did not throw away the canned butter I purchased in 2008 because it was too expensive. In fact, just finished up a can. The taste is "slightly" different; I am comparing to store bought butter though. But no signs that it is rancid so I will try to use it up, unless I see/smell something that I have doubt about with one of the cans.

Greta, I am so glad you did this little experiment for us!

I am a little embarrassed to say that I don't know how many cans of this butter that I have -- we bought at least a case of it last summer along with at least a case of the canned cheese.

I think the fresh canned butter taste about the same as store bought, but my husband was able to detect a small difference though he says it is not at all unpleasant. He also has it is marginally richer than the local brand purchased here, so maybe that is the difference?

From the Red Feather site (as quoted from another site: "Canned food has a shelf life of at least two years from the date of processing. Canned food retains its safety and nutritional value well beyond two years, but it may have some variation in quality, such as a change of colour and texture. Canning is a high-heat process that renders the food commercially sterile. Food safety is not an issue in products kept on the shelf or in the pantry for long periods of time. In fact, canned food has an almost indefinite shelf life at moderate temperatures (75° F and below). Canned food as old as 100 years has been found in sunken ships and it is still microbiologically safe! We don't recommend keeping canned food for 100 years, but if the can is intact, not dented or bulging, it is edible."

I've had some for several years, wife was baking an ran out so I gave her a tin, its was fine. I did find a tin starting to rust though so I sprayed the others with a poly spray.

The food storage specialist in my church told me today that she has heard from the Red Feather Butter company in New Zealand about the expiration dates they put on their cans.

They told her that they have had cans of their butter as old as 30 years tested, and they were still in prime condition. She was told that they had to put an expiration date on the cans to be able to sell it in the USA and that they randomly selected 2 years to put on the cans. In most country's they don't have to put an expiration date to sell their product.

But bottom line they informed her the cans of butter were fine at 30 years shelf life.

I'm rotating out a case of red feather, and have about half a case to go.
It's six years old, and tastes just fine... I'm still alive anyway...
The price sure has gone up tho.
