My brother has 10 acres fenced off with cattle, goats and a horse. Coyotes have moved into the woods behind his house and are getting too close to his livestock.

Right now my brother is using a bolt action 308 which he has used to take down several coyotes. He wants to replace that 308 with a 223 as his main predator gun.

He wants a flattop with no front sight, strictly for a scope.

I found a CMMG 18 inch bull barrel, but CMMG does not seem to have a good reputation.

We would like to keep the budget say maybe around $700 or less for the upper.

What are some of the good options are out there?

Bravo company and noveseke are some of the better ones out there. I was hoping not to spend $900 on an upper.

About any 16/18 inch upper will get job done....no need to spend as much on an upper as a whole rifle costs.....

Since budget seems to be a concern go with the PSA unless you are taking extremely long shots which shouldn't be a factor on 10 acres.

Mossberg MMR Hunter for around $600-700 and a decent scope should work. I bought mine only to shoot at the range, with a Redfield Battlezone on top, and couldn't be happier. It has been 100% reliable with every brand of ammo. A friend of mine advised his stepfather to buy an MMR as a coyote gun after shooting mine.

Coyotes don't usually go after anything much larger than a rabbit. Horses will kill coyotes if they get too close, and all it takes is a swift kick from a hind hoof to send Mr. Coyote into the wildlife afterlife. I have coyotes in the woods around my farm, and they never go near the horses. I have a couple of horses that will actually attack any dogs that wander out into the pastures, and I once saw one of my mares punt a Jack Russell about 10 feet in the air. The dog survived the experience, but has never gone near that pasture again.

^^^^ This.We have mules (both saddle and drivers) and a donk.We also have a lot of coyotes and red fox,but they wont come near the livestock. My mare in my avitar is a dog killer.We have watched her kill a coyote and a dog,she will run them down and stomp them. We were rideing once and a dog ran out from a house into the road and it was all I could do to control her and get her out of there.

I guess she isnt in my avitar! I will fix that.

Here are three mail-order companies I've purchased uppers from. Can't complain about the quality of any of them. For precision shots on a small acrerage, I'd personally go with a 20" bull barrel. Question, will you just be buying an upper to swap out on an AR you already have, or will you be buying a stripped lower that you need to build from scratch?

I'd just build one, get a upper for $100, good barrel for $300ish, BCG $100ish, hand guard for another $150 or so and call it good...

you'll end up with a very nice upper....

the only thing you should need beyond that is a gas tube,muzzle device and charging handle and you're GTG for around $650~700 depending on what you go with...


that's just me though, i prefer to build my stuff now unless i can get comparable for cheaper..some of the other options in the thread are bad either...but i do think you can do a tad bit better for the money.

its a coyote gun.. you dont need to try and build a top of the line DMR or anything.. youve already state your on a budget.. you can get a complete polymer lower for around 150 from several places or , you already know psa has good deals.. just catch one of their deals on a lower/lpk.. as for an upper? just about any should be accurate enough.. with ok ammo and a decent scope.. i say go with the psa upper you linked to.. again.. psa is fine.. and theres no need to build a match grade rifle for the sole puropose of taking down a few coyotes.
