Recent events have really shaken me.

Looking at it, (the news of the recent bank collapses) I am glad that I started preparing and didn’t wait until now to start. At the same time, I am well aware of MANY MANY things I would like to have done or purchased but don’t have the space or money for.

The gas situation here was pretty bad a few days ago. The news never reported on it, but there were two small-scale riots (approximately 60 people arrested or injured I hear) over gas last week. Thankfully nobody was killed, but I have heard of people getting nearly beat to death for filling their car up and not sharing with others, etc.

Yesterday at one of my classes, I overheard several of the people there talking about the “end times are here” etc. Some were drawing parallels to verses in Revelations, etc and unlike other times when I heard that talk, no one was arguing or making fun of them. People here are really scared.

One of my instructors is an MD and he has taken all his money out of the bank and sold (from what I hear) a majority of his stock holdings. Instead of discussing homework we got an hour-long lecture about buying gold and silver. From talking to him, I get the feeling a lot of wealthy people are scrambling to convert their investments to cash or buy gold and silver.

I have no way to “bug out”. I have two kids and way too many supplies to leave without a very good reason. My house payment, and all the bills are caught up and I’m grateful for that but I don’t have a lot left to spend on much else right now.

Obama is going to win this election. That depresses me more than the gas lines and the bank mess. He is going to legislate me out of my right to keep and bear arms, and raise taxes and do all that other socialist BS and ….ugh I just don’t even want to think about it.

My goal right now is to survive financially until I get through school in two years. I should be ok, but not much more than that. I am adding to my food stores almost everyday but it takes a while to add even a months worth of food reserves. Maybe by the end of the year Ill have around 14 months worth of food…

“Other preps” are doing well. Of course some of these other preps were started years ago and I basically stopped working on these preps a long time ago.

I am doing much better than most right now. My bills are very low and I can usually pay them with one paycheck a month, but with going back to school, my income is much less and it is taking almost everything I make to keep us afloat.

The kids are happy and relatively oblivious to the events of the past few weeks. I’m sure they can sense that their Daddy is nervous about something but they haven’t asked about it.

I tried to sell off some personal items last week and made some money, but the prices paid were much less than they used to be. A lot of people on craigslist and ebay are sharks, looking for people who are desperate to pay the rent this month in order to get something for nearly nothing. In the end, I figure it is better to hold onto what I have than to sell it for 20% of what it is worth.

I’m not really sure what the point of this post is, other than to state what is probably obvious to most people here.

Countryboy, this was a great post. I think a lot of people are mirroring your thoughts.....I know I am!!

DH and I are sort of in the same position, except no kids. We're struggling a bit to save as much money as we can, because we're finding that prices are rising a lot faster than we anticipated.

I have a bit of personal debt I'm also feverishly wanting to pay off while I build up our EF. Its frustrating because I wasnt in this position about a year ago and then it got out of hand :taped:  So its a bit rough for me right now :( *sigh*

Anywho, times will be tough for the forseeable future but I think we can weather the storm.

Hang in there. You are not alone. Preparing, survival, etc. is a way of life and building an insurance policy against the unknown. Life will go on. Some days will be tough some not so tough. Life is a series of ups and downs. We are just on a down (feels like a mighty steep one). You are probably better off and prepared than 99% of the population.

We are all a bit hesitant about what in is store for us. This is a place for us to learn about what we can do to help ourselves from whatever the future may bring. Knowledge is power. We may all be spread out around the country but we are in this together and we are going through these same thoughts... Do I have enough? Do I know enough? Is there anything else I can do? Am I forgetting something important? What's the best way to keep my family safe?

Just keep on doing the best you can with what you have.

Perseverance is more prevailing than violence; and many things which cannot be overcome when they are together, yield themselves up when taken little by little.

I feel your pain, my brother.

I live in a mobile home and am VERY pressed for storage. I simply cannot store a great deal of supplies.

I can live, foodwise, on very little and will stock up on concentrated foodstuffs.

I live adjacent to a river, so water should not become an issue.

I probably should store some gasoline [very carefully] and ammunition.

Damn....

I just can't help but chuckle when I think of Jesus telling his disciples- "when the banks fail- look to the east."

I honestly don't think He was talking about "banks failing" as much as He was about an overall climate of dis-ease. We're headed for dark times regardless.
