I went to a large flea market last week and one of the vendors had a lot of German mil surp stuff.

He had several wool blankets for 5 each but when I smelled them they smelled of kerosene.

Is that normal?

Can it be washed out of them?

My guess is they were treated with a chemical similar to kerosene to disinfect them after use in an emergency.

Might have been Stored in moth balls. Baking soda will work or just air them out outside for a couple days should help.
Have you ever smelled moth balls? how'd you hold 'em, by the wings? How'd you get thier legs apart?
A good rain soak and air dry will do wonders

My guess is that they were last used (or stored) where there was a kerosene space heater and the cleaning process, assuming there was one, was insufficient to remove the odor... Regarding getting rid of the smell, I'd suggest you let them hang on a line outside for a couple days (bring them in at night so they don't get damp from the dew.)

Kerosene is widely used in turd-world nations as a means to rid wool blankets of smallpox.

I thought this fact could be helpful.

A spin through the wash on cold with rinso will do the trick.

Kerosence is also used in turd-world anarchies to get rid of lice.
