I recently inherited my grandfathers Smith and Wesson model 28 Highway Patrolman .357mag with 6" barrel. I was wondering since this gun came out in 1954, and I dont know when my grandfather purchased it is it ok to shoot the newer +P ammo or +P+ ammo in it?? I have read some conflicting articles on using +P ammo in older firearms. Since this is a S&W and not some cheaper firearm, I believe that it will handle +P ammo, especially since I will not be shooting +P ammo in it all the time, only for hunting and defense.

What do you guys think???? :)

+P,

Should not be a problem for your .357mag. since it is a lighter charge than the firearm was made to handle. If you have any questions to the firearms condition, have your local gunsmith take a look see, should be no problems though.

Keep your senses sharp and your weapons loaded and ready.

The Model 28 regaudless of age can handle all standard pressure .38 Specials,.38 special +P , .38 special +P+ and .357 commercial and Handloaded data rounds. They don't get any stronger than this.
