So I was looking through an emergency preparedness guide, and they made a point about making arrangements for your pets;

"Pets are not permitted in emergency shelters. Service animals for those who depend on them are allowed."

They discussed keeping a list of pet friendly places, contacting hotels/motels to check policies on accepting pets and restrictions in numbers, asking local animal shelters if they provided emergency shelter care for pets in disaster and other possible shelters.

For those of you who own pets, would you also plan and prep for your pet's safety as well?

Where i live we have fallout/bombshelters in every apartment houses... And you can't take animals with you there... It is fun for sick way...
For keeping moral up there is some guidelines how there is in every shelter couple of gassmask and rubbersuit and so on, so couple of people can go patrol from apartment to apartment and feeding pets... (because they asume it is safe to stay in apartments short period of time per day!)

Yeah? You can stay only about 1 our per day in radiation and you will leave your pets there? How long your animals could survive?
That is mainly just some bullpoo what they told us to calm people during peace time... And when bombs are dropped... Anything don't anymore matter...

Yeah i don't going to put my pets down... They will be where i'm... So if my pets can't be in shelter, i must just go little bit farer away than my basement... That is my plan... Pets stay with me, Even if i dont' take anything else with me i don't going to abandon my pets...

Yeah i'm that humane guy who think pets are part of the family... I just think it is cruel to keep pets and love them many years and then suddenly just put it down... Ofcourse there have to be plan how to save pets too! :)

But my bet go for this... In this apartment house there is a lot of pets... and lot of eldery who just don't going to leave their pets behind... I bet everybody just take their pets and think after everybody is in fallout shelter how we can manage that situation. :D: There just don't going to be anybody who can say to their family and friends that they can't take their pets with them... And if there is, somebody surely toss that guy out of the shelter and there is some room for pets!

I don't consider my 2 dogs as PETS, One is a Schipperke, the other a Chihuahua , Both weigh under 25 lbs. The Schipperke is from Belgium, They were used as guard dogs on ships in the No Atlantic and as herding dogs for sheep. Both dogs are excellent early warning systems for any one coming into the yard or near the house.I trust them more that I do any man made alarm system. And yes I prep for them.
My wife has started looking into making/canning in pint jars our own dog food. It is cheaper to DIY.

Absolutely! Our cat is 13 and on prescription cat food to prolong her kidney function, really more of a preventative measure than anything else. Before we moved 6 hours away, I went by her vet and got two large bags of her food because I didn't know when we would find a vet near our new house. I also asked them to print me a copy of all of her records to keep in my important documents. When we look at emergency water consumption we also take her water needs into consideration.

As far as if we had to bug out, our most likely situation is a hurricane and my parents are 45 minutes inland so they'd probably be our destination if we had to leave. Any further and I figure from our experience with the move that the cat is good in the car for at least 6 hours...other than getting carsick halfway through she was calm and mostly slept the whole way. If she was a bad traveler I'd probably find a vet who could prescribe some sedatives and just keep some on hand? Now that I think about it, that might not be a bad idea anyway because I don't know if she'll become more nervous as she gets older.

For the carsickness, next time we move I won't feed her the morning of so she's traveling on an empty stomach. Because we might not be able to anticipate a bug out, I also now keep some towels and plastic grocery bags in the car - even when not traveling with an animal I'm pretty bad about spilling my travel mug so they come in handy regardless :D:

Yes, my dog is set. She has her own backpack with a number of things in it (have listed 10x here before). I am also learning of wild plants that both people/dogs can eat (I do not study human-only types so as to not mix things up in case of the real thing) such as dandelions and cattail.

We can survive on our own. I'd rather die in the mud than leave my dog somewhere while I seek a human-only shelter.

It seems to be a mutual feeling for pet owners! I have 2 small 4 legged alarm systems too. They usually like to eat what we do anyway, so It makes it easy to prep for them also. I do stock up on their bones and heathy treats, and some dog food. They ARE part of my family!

I keep a bunch of large puppy pads for the inside of the cat's travel carrier. If she needs to go to the bathroom and I can't stop, no harm done. Just take out the dirty one and throw it away, and lay down a clean one.

I also have a rubber liner for the SUV back cargo area, which has saved me from my own spills about a million times, including spilling a bunch of vinegar back there. It's a lifesaver. They come in generic sizes you can trim to fit, as well as custom for your vehicle.

My Cats MUST be provided for...

For one reason, myself and my family love them. But for another reason, at a retreat, those cats will HELP ENSURE OUR SURVIVAL!

Cats keep mice out of the house. Out of the barn. Out of the food stores... They are ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY for civilization! Indeed, their "domestication" dates back to the exact moment we ceased to be hunter-gatherers and became civilized!

Why did the Black Plague happen? Because CATS were vilified and associated with evil during the Dark Ages and they were killed on sight People who kept them were accused of heresy and WITCHCRAFT. And so the cat wasn't around to kill off the plague bearing rodents...

We have a 23 pound Rat Terrier miracle worker who can keep our disabled son calm and focused when the world is coming down around him, he's well provided for in our preps as any family hero would be.

We have a 90 pound Golden Retriever that is good for absolutely nothing but morale boosting and that should never be underestimated. He does hunt rabbits on shares, he brings me 3/4 of a rabbit sometimes. He always keeps the back left haunch himself and leaves the rest on the porch for me (sometimes hard to appreciate). I guess he could help provide their meat if he ever gets the idea of hunting and food going together. But whether he hunts or not, we took him to keep and we will. He's learning to carry a pack, so far he walks in a circle trying to look at it, but it's early days yet. :)

Absolutely prep for our 3 pets. I have extra treats set back as well as food and water. Also, 2 have packs, and I have a stroller for one. (don't laugh, it will serve 2 purposes- carry my 6lb princess AND extra water).

Moses has a large Ruffwear Palisades Dog Pack. I LOVE this pack! 2 - 2 liter water bladders that will help keep his sides cool. 2 HUGE pouches that will hold quite a bit of food, and the saddle pouches come off from the actual harness to give him a break when we rest. Also a handle on the top of the harness between the packs to grab quickly if he slips or needs an extra boost up. Have a tie out cable, a couple of raw hides, treats, boots, shot records, collapsible bowls, a mini mag light on both packs, and an extra light in both packs, food, water, and I do have a couple of first aid items in Moses pack, but most of their first aid is in with ours. Extra leashes also and a tennis ball. Probably a couple of more things I am not remembering to list.

Copper has an Outward Hound H2O Hydration Dog Backpack. It has a small pouch, but since he is older, I figured the 2 liter bladder would be enough for him to carry. His pack will carry the collapsible bowls, his boots and his water.

Abby, (she is small enough to be carried but to small to hoof it to far by herself) she is 6 lbs-- have a doggie stroller for her which as funny as that sounds would really come in handy if we had to hoof it. It holds A LOT, plus her. The wheels have shocks on them as well, so if we were going through rough terrain, it would not be bouncing from here to kingdom come.

I have their first aid in with ours. I have a 6 month supply of heartgaurd and 6 month supply of Frontline for all 3.
I also have Foriflora in case they may get into some bad water. (we already had that issue with Moses at the doggie park) So, I decided to get an extra box (30 pkts) of probitics...just in case. Also, have extra eyedrops for Abby, as she has chronic dry eye.

Since water will be the biggest issue having our 3 dogs, I am taking extra steps to insure we have enough, yet don't have to try to pack it all ourselves. Water is HEAVY. 1 gallon = 8lbs, so the less we have to pack (hence the stroller) the happier everyone will be....

I DO need to get some pain meds from the vet for each of them. She knows we do a lot of outdoor stuff, and she has given us extra meds before.

I would check with your local Government Office Emergency Management Office, as some places have changed their policies since New Orleans/Japan. Here in the UK, I have checked with my local Council department and they will allow pets into shelters.

I have also got a list of hotels where we could stay if need be.

As far as emergency kits, my dog has his own packed in with mine, he also has a panier vest to wear, so he can carry some light weight stuff if need be. I do have muzzels for him but he really doesn't like wearing them so I need to work on those.

I have three boxes of food downstairs for him, and a further three upstairs in the BOB and flood supply box as well as water.

He has his own FA kit, grooming kit, rainwear, winter wear, and I have ID stuff on my 4GB drive I keep in my EDC. I also have two pet carriers (for other anmals I may come across as my dog is too big for those), I just need to get a collapsible fabric crate so he can use that when we are at the shelter so he has a kennel type thing for a bit of piece and quiet. Oh and I forgot his also got his own life jacket, as we live in a flood zone.

Plan for your pets like they were a child and you will get everything you need.

There are some great videos on You Tube about pet Bobs:
