premise; one of us hits Powerball and invests the $ into buying land and starting a town for SB members.

where? Kansas? Oregon? Texas?

what businesses? grocery, cafe, gun store/range.
electronics/radio shop.
auto repair.

could we import conservatives to run the schools?
would the local radio station play Rush in the afternoon? news/talk?

should we have a squirrel/nut on the flag?

I volunteer to work 911 dispatch. great way to know what's going on, I mean to serve my community. :thumb:

I like the thought experiment. I suggest that OK, AR and possibly MO be added to the potential site list. I volunteer to be the town/colony dentist, health consultant, researcher, mad scientist. We should have plenty of useful skill sets represented here to set up in style. I offer Gault's Gulch for a name and the Gadsden Flag unchanged. Dual authority of a mayor and sheriff over a 'well regulated militia' should provide all the law enforcement/security needed. What would be the criteria for the initial settlers/founders and what would be the policy for latecomers/'immigrants' ?

Let's say for the argument that someone hits the powerball and wants to do this. Is that winner going to build all the homes or do we have our own homes built on his/her property? Do we pay for our parcel?

Ok, so those questions are answered and we have members who are doctors, nurses, police, firemen, auto technicians, plumbers, carpenters, gunsmiths, and some who want to open stores to sell products or services. Who builds the schools, hospital, and who pays for it?

Ok, those questions are answered and 25% what to move - they sell their homes to someone that nobody knows - or worse they decide to rent it out....

How do you deal with folks you just can't seem to get along with. Maybe the winner is a good Christian man and his family - will he allow others of different faiths live there? We might have some Jews, Catholics, or maybe even Wiccans in our membership. Are we all going to be able to "get along"?

There are a lot of issues that have to be dealt with in a community that only shares the concept of sustainability (which means different things to each individual).

Will the governing factors be the constitution - or at least the bill of rights? Do we suspend the bill of rights that are less tolerable to us?

I think it should be in a place that has no horrible weather, rich natural resources. Somewhere in Appalachia. Pennsylvania, west Virgina....

PA already has a large vol. Ambulance, vol. firefighter base..

Proected from earthquakes, hurricanes, wild fires are controllable, tornados are small & rare. Lots of water. No crazy water laws. Most diverse wildlife population in North America, one of the most diverse in the world.

[] Location?
If you want prime land, you will pay $$$$$$$
If you want subprime land, you will still pay a lot.
...
As to disaster resistance, a dual ring village might be a viable solution.
Some ideas already covered here:

If one is hunkered down behind a 40 ft to 50 ft high barrier ring wall, parking the DRV in a flood plain is not illogical.
Or in a coastal region...

{The highest documented storm surge in the U.S. occurred in 2005 during Hurricane Katrina, when Pass Christian, MS, recorded a 27.8 foot (8.47 m) storm surge above mean sea level. The highest High Water Mark on record for a U.S. hurricane occurred in Biloxi, MS during Katrina, where a High Water Mark of 34.1 feet (10.39 m) above mean sea level was recorded on the outside of the Beau Rivage Lighthouse. The surge was 22 feet high in Biloxi, so the combination of the tide (about 1 foot) and 11-foot waves on top of the storm surge created the 34.1-foot high water mark. }

Not Oregon unless you get a good buy on the Moonies property.

Those and a few hardware/saloons/brothels mega stores.
could we import conservatives to run the schools?
Sorry but the are a endangered species and require special permits to import. Might go with Libertarians since there are a lot of them (mostly young and just out of College) and a few are somewhat conservative.
would the local radio station play Rush in the afternoon? news/talk?
Whats a radio station?
should we have a squirrel/nut on the flag?
I prefer the porcupine or skunk as a symbol of leave me the **** alone.

As long as they're my kind of conservatives, I'm all for it. :)

That's the problem with this kind of thing. You have a vision in your mind's eye, and I doubt it conforms to the vision most others bring to the table.

For example:

Rush Limaugh? Are you kidding? We'd want people who THINK, not who look to a has-been radio "personality" to know what they should believe.

See? It isn't so easy, is it? :)

Interesting But I really doubt If anyone who hits the Powerball jackpot will buy land especially for SB members. I might but I don't waste money on lotteries or gambling...
Lot of other things to waste money on.

I have found my place in possibly the most conservative, outdoors loving, fishing, hunting, camping etc. paradise that might exist anywhere. It is called the Good times valley by locals and the 2 biggest towns are Saratoga and Encampment, Wyoming. My mtn place is a few miles to the west near the Divide.

And I have to post the following, apologies to Hank Williams Jr. There is more to the song but I am quoting the most relevant to what I do and too long to quote all of the song...

I try to live and do what this song says and I think there are people like it all over the USA - few ever hear or see much of them though. There are actually "Survival - Preppervilles" all over if people look hard enough >

"I live back in the woods, you see
A woman and the kids, and the dogs and me
I got a shotgun, rifle and a 4-wheel drive
And a country boy can survive
Country folks can survive!

We came from the West Virginia coalmines
And the Rocky Mountains and the western skies
And we can skin a buck; we can run a trot line
And a country boy can survive
Country folks can survive!

Cause you can't starve us out and you can't make us run!
Cause we're them old boys raised on shotguns
And we say grace and we say Ma'am
And if you ain't into that we don't give a damn!

We're from North California and south Alabam
And little towns all around this land
And we can skin a buck; we can run a trot line
And a country boy can survive
Country folks can survive!!"

Just a quick list from another list

Prepper Community of about 5,000 people

Southeast of Springfield Missouri, on the James River, off US60 Highway

25 sections of ground (5 miles x 5 miles) 25 square miles 16,000 acres

14,000 acres of farmland in 40, 80, and 160 acre farm fields, each with living barrier fence on dike with barrier ditch.

1,000 acres of walled town located near the river but not on it. Some distance from US60 on an all-weather road.

Oblong Grid pattern: 100m x 200m = 328.1’ x 656.2’ w/16’ alley & 36’ streets, 2 lots x 10 lots
(656’ c/l of streets - 18’ ½ street – 18’ ½ street)/10 lots = 62’ effective wide lots
(328’ c/l of streets - 18’ ½ street – 18’ ½ street – 16’ alley)/2 lots = 138’ effective deep lots
10 62’ x 138’ (18.9m x 42.1m) usable lots per side per standard block with 16’ alley & 36’ streets

I have given this some thought were I to win the powerball in the range of 300 million. I have on occasions located land tracts of 700 to 1000 acres which in this area will support a lot of agriculture activity.

I'm of a age that moving doesn't appeal very much so I'd build Prepperville right where I'm at.

I'll do that through a combination of targeted start up businesses and affordable housing.

In a separate personal business account I'd operate a warehouse/distribution center in conjunction with the agri-business. I'd also open and operate a security business.

I think doing things this way allows me to prep without prepping. Take for instance the warehouse or the various businesses that I'd own some percentage of most of which supports a self reliant life.

It seems to me this gives the best of OPSEC and freedom to the at large community.

I think most of us at one time played this mental exercise. It would be real nice to be in a large group of like minded folks. Hippies and artist squat in big groups in run down sections of town. Liberals build massive suburbatopias to camp in. Most immigrant ethnic groups tend to clan together.

But preppers? Nope. The need for land and OpSec keep us apart. It is our nature.

Plus as Jerry's list shows you need a lot of skilled folks just to run a small town that is not dependent on outside skills and supplies. At a certain level of population the OpSec goes right out the window.
