I have noticed lately, largely on "Doomsday Preppers" that people expect a particular thing to happen. Be it an Economic collapse, EMP, "Martial law" etc. For example a person could be completely focused on an EMP and not worry at all about twisters or other natural disasters.

What I am getting at is I think preppers/survivalists should be well rounded. I think a lot of folks will be caught off guard when preparing for one specific thing.

Just the same as with your preps don't focus on one aspect of it. A lot of preppers go for ammo and food but not something like deodorant or Toilet Paper.

Long story short: Are you well rounded in preparing and knowledge?

I think you might be referring to the lady who was prepping for a bird flu epidemic. She built essentially a biohazard containment room. She also had some sort of water filtration system for bacteria and viruses.

I don't remember if she was ready for an interruption in the grocery supply, whhich would go along with most disaster scenarios. I don't think she had any plans for self defense. She had rigged an outdoor shower for decontamination, but I didn't see any alternate power sources.

In general, I agree with your comment. Like the Boy Scouts, it's good to be ready for any unexpected event.

Well, I figure that I don't need to worry about twisters, deodorant or toilet paper. Rags come in handy for cleaning your arse, good hygiene beats using deodorant and twisters don't occur here.

I figure the best way is to prep for the most likely scenario, which is why I don't have a snow shovel or snow chains.

We only occassionaly watch Nat Geo prepper show as a means of entertainment.
They aren't doing this show to help people see the need to be prepared. This show is a means to ridicule preppers. They slant it to make people look like idiots.

For some reason they seem to think it sells better that way. This is about making money not a public service to inform people.

I think some people may start out prepping and come to survival forums with a particular disaster in mind. The thing is it doesn't take long for most to realize the need to prep for the more general likely events also.

To prep for one is to prep for all.

You can't prepare for everything that might happen; case in point, meteor hitting your house.

Virtually all survivalist/prepper scenarios require one to have water, food, first aid/health care, defense, heat/cooking fuel.

Once you have that, you've increased hugely the number of scenarios you can survive. Then it's a matter of adding any specific scenarios relevant to your context. For instance, if you live downwind of a nuclear power plant sitting near a fault or susceptible to a tsunami, you might want a fallout shelter and/or lots of plastic and duct tape. As well as potassium iodide.

We prep for what we feel is the most likely situation. Prepping for every single possible scenario will spread us too thin. Much of the time prepping for one thing will overlap into other scenarios anyway. For example, I am sure bird lady knows that if there is a pandemic infrastructure will suffer greatly and things like fuel and food may be scarce and preps accordingly.

I couldn't agree more. "Scenerio prepping" is stupid. It doesn't take a genius to look at the thousands of "end of the world" predictions that the survivalist community has vomited forth over the past few decades. If none of them got it right, who are we to expect that we will?

Focusing on some pet scenario leaves you open to being blindsided by things you don't expect. It makes a lot more sense to prepare for whatever might happen, and keep alert to try and spot it ahead of time.
