Hi everyone!
I have been wanting a way to transport fuel in my bug-out bag safely and conveniently and (ideally!) on a budget.
I'm concerned about leakage and about contaminating the fuel itself.
I am considering getting an [MSR aluminum fuel bottle] ( (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B005LY54FG/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=112QSKJPPNXUN&coliid=IKI38TNK68A0P"]Amazon.com: MSR Fuel Bottle: Sports & Outdoors) on the side of my pack.
Can I use an aluminum or stainless steel hydration bottle (like Klean Kanteen or SIGG) instead? I have a bunch of those already and it would save me ~$20 I could use elsewhere.

If the bottles are unlined, you can use them. but I wouldn't.

Too much risk of cross contamination if you forget which one is which. And more importantly, if someone else uses the bottles, for whatever reason, it would be really easy to get them mixed up. A drink out of the fuel bottle, or putting water in the stove or adding water to the fuel bottle.

Just my opinion.

Cross contamination is a real concern; I would have to mark the bottle and its lid clearly.

How can I tell if a bottle is lined? Scrape with a knife?

Some will be marked somewhere on the bottle. But most will not.

If it is a large mouth bottle you can probably tell by looking. Small mouth, not so easy. Run a finger inside. If it is super slick it is probably lined.

Best bet would be to find the same bottle on-line or in a store and see what the description says.

My concern with a lined bottle for fuel is that the fuel will very likely dissolve the lining and really screw up the fuel, unless it is specifically for fuel.

Just my opinion.

Yeah, Esbit tablets are good. But double bag them. I wonder if they're made from rotten fish because they sure smell that way.

I recently bought one of these Trangia bottles to fill with iso alcohol. Don't know if they're good for long term storage or not.
For a 3 day bag - two maybe 3 nights in an emergency situation, speed/weight and stealth would probably outweigh the niceties of warm food.

For kero, chinamart sells blur plastic 32oz bottles of coleman brand kero. In the store I seem to remember there being red plastic 32oz bottles of coleman white gas fuel too, but I dont see them on the website. I dont see why they could not be refilled, at least a few times, but it is probably not recommended and of course done at your own risk.

I have one msr bottle that good work my whisper light international. I've had it for five years, no leaks, at all with pressure. But if you are using it just as transport for fuel, not with the pressure unit, you'll get the rise in pressure in any bottle, thus losing fuel every time you open it.

Theoretically, the Kleen Kanteen bottles could be used, assuming the plastic screw-in caps (or gaskets if present) are resistant to dissolving from exposure to fuel. I note that the website (and FAQ) for those bottles does not address using for fuel storage. Call them and ask.

On the other hand, I routinely use red MSR fuel bottles purchased back in the early '80s. GTG.
