There is a backflow preventer you can get installed in your sewer line. It costs a bit though. I have been thinking of getting one pretty much for the same reason as you give...

not sure about your area ... bad enough $$$ when the check valves are installed as the new lines are installed ... retro-fits are even worse ... and they aren't perfect either .... enough back pressure and they can fail

if you live in a newer residential area with a lift station as part of the municipal sewer system - expect problems .... especially if the water supply continues after the electric knocks out the lift station .... those new sewer lines are not designed to hold large amounts of sewage - only convey .... the older residential will most probably be designed for gravity feed to the sewer plant .... back-ups also if the plant and the operators are out ....

I'm prepared .... not that expensive in most cases .... measure up your drains and get plugs .... for extra protection measure for a 2 X 4 brace from plug to ceiling .... for toilets get a closet flange closure plate to bolt down .... if unprepared - newspaper crammed in and topped off with concrete can make an emergency plug
