Plub plant leaves turned bright and wilted

Anyone know what it is? Almost the entire tree leaves turned brown and now they're wilting,as if we didnt' water? We kept the tree well watered and had a thick mound of grass leaves aroudn it as compost. When we dug into the ground, the dirt was moist, so it couldn't have been watering...any thoughts? thanks!.
