siphon pump = good idea ! But the waterproof matches not so good . All water proof matches I've tried were crap - hard to lite and had a very small weak flame . I think you'd be better off getting regular stick matches and put them in a waterproof container .

A cheap multi tool is a cheap multi tool. You will find it not worth the money. Poncho will work if you don't have to do anything while wearing it.(and not very long at that). The fire starters and siphon are good to have.

Knives/multi tools are tools you will come to depend on. From experience I can tell you the cheap ones can't be depended on peroid. Exposure kills. Rain is cold even in the sumer. Get the best rain suit you can afford. You should be able to work in it and if need be hike in it.

Sadly a lot of equipment that are marked "EMERGENCY" if cheap will be found to be of no real help in a true emergency, and tend to fail when needed the most.

Try these waterproof matches. They are awesome. They are a bit pricey. I put them in my BOBs and my 72 hr packs just in places where getting a fire going could be life or death. Everywhere else that I need a fire starter kit I vacuum pack some strike anywhere matches with some sort of tinder.

These are the best windproof and waterproof survival matches we have ever tested! Used internationally on ocean liner lifeboats, SAS British Military and by NATO Military troops.

what do you light on fire on a lifeboat...? :D:

A cheap multitool is just that- cheap; but it is still better than nothing. Put a kit together of cheap stuff, then upgrade as you can. My old multitool is my daughters now as I have a better one.

You're right it's better than nothing(if you're lucky). I was concern when I wrote what I did that it might be taken as a put down or worse. But really one thing I feel we should do on these forums is to educate others. I would hate to see the poster thinking he has thing "covered" with cheap and poorly made items and tools that are so often sold as "emergency" items.(hey if they are for "emergency" use it must be good-right) Too many times better than nothing turns out to be the same as or no different than nothing.

In my time with Scouting I've seen a lot of this type of cheap equipment and in the begining own some myself. I've found such thing as cheap ponchos and no name multi-tools to be not worth the money. They will not do what you need them to do when you need them to do it!! If I can save even one person from throwing their money away on cheap junk and possibly endangering themselves by depending on this junk I'll be happy.

I also think that there are a lot of preppers who do not have the experience with which to judge a lot of equipment and tend to go with how items are advertised. I think we all can agree that there is an awful lot of junk being sold as "survivial" gear.
