Pepper spray for the wife. Need some advice.

So, before this thread rightfully gets moved to the non-lethal weaponry section, I need some advice.

My wife wants to start carrying pepper spray.

It would need to be something small enough to fit on her key chain in her purse, have a trigger that is easy to use in a high stress situation, but won't go off accidentally in her purse.

Any advice on models would be greatly appreciated.

(Personally, I would prefer something that projects a hot piece of lead in the .45-inch range at high speeds for her personal protection, but she just isn't going to do that at this stage, so don't even bother suggesting guns and CCW...)

Personally, I think Tasers are a bad idea. When they are shot, both points have to hit the person and they have to have a good enough spread to be effective. If one point hits the body and the other misses, then it's not going to work. You also have to be close enough to hit and far enough away to shoot.

I have KO Jet Pepper Spray, and it is small enough to carry it in a pocket. So I guess a purse should not be a problem. What your wife needs to understand though she should take it out in her hand and have it there as long as she is in the area that she bought it for. It wont do her much good in the purse or pocket. And no need to put it on a key chain.

AtticusFinch, well if she is concerned of her security I guess she should be able to remember to take it with her. It should become such an item as the keys, which she also usually does not forgets.

My problem with it being on the key chain is that if she needs to use the keys and have the pepperspray ready in her hand it is impossible. And the keys dangling there could make it difficult to grip it properly in a stress situation.

I carry one, and just like my keys or my knife or my wallet I just cant imagine being without one outside my house. It is an automatism she can train too.

I have used pepper spray, don't bother with it, get a stun gun, check the laws in your state. As has already been mentioned a Taser needs to have both darts hit the target, most Taser are also equipped with contact probes however for backup. Pepper can blow back on the user, that's no fun, especially in a defensive situation.

One thing that is often overlooked by people buying pepper spray is the training to effectively deploy it and how to react to the fact that you are going to get it on you when you spray it.

When I went to the academy we had to take a face full of it and then fight off and restrain an attacker trying to take away our weapons. I took the chemical agents and taser certifications, both of them sucked.

Pepper spray hurts and you have to be able to understand the physical and psychological effects to use it properly.

You can also get the inert training units to practice drawing and spraying an actual person, they are alcohol and water based units and are green so they cannot be mistaken for live agents.

Three key things...

1) It expires...as well, it needs to be shaken once in a while to make sure its components do not separate during storage.

2) Use it and run away...do not advance on them and give them a chance to recover or grab hold of you. Hit em and run.

3) While it is less lethal, be emotionally prepared for the screams. I have had this used on me during a training course, and been around other who had it used on them. Some people scream as if they are on fire. Me? I could not catch my breath enough to scream...

Excellent points! If you don't mind, I would like to add on to what you suggest with a 4th point:

4) Like any prep or weapon, you MUST practice and know how to use it. I bought an extra can of the spray and we went outside in the yard and took turns spraying it. Just as I sprayed it once, the wind caught it and blew some back on me. Knocked me to the ground. It was the best thing that ever happened - - really - - and the reason is that this CAN happen in a real life situation. You must be prepared for it so that you can be prepared to RUN away from the situation even though you might be affected by the spray back. If you aimed correctly, your assailant got a full dose and is unable to pursue you, and yours is just a misting. Practice with it, and rotate it every few years.

I have used bear spray on someone and it definitely worked.

The Mexican kid i used it on was stealing stuff out of my truck and wearing just a tank-top shirt and shorts. a one second spray enveloped him from head to foot.

The cops caught him down the street using some old ladies garden hose trying to wash off the fire that was burning him from head to foot.

Even if you get a small can for her key chain get her a big can of bear spray for home use.

If someone tries to kick in the door she can fill the room as she retreats to a back room.
They will not likely follow her if there is a cloud of bear spray in between them.

I have a gas mask and a spare hand gun in my bedroom and will use this trick to give me a super advantage if some one kicks in my door.

Never fight fair

I talked to several folks in law enforcement about the mixture used in mace, and they recommended the Sabre brand to me to get for my wife (I do some volunteer work at the local sheriff's office in my retirement).

Unless you are law enforcement, you can order only cans that are less than 2 oz, but that gives you about 10 or 11 one second bursts. Keep in mind that the Kimber is only 2 shots. I looked at the Kimber and liked the fact that you can "aim" it like a pistol somewhat, but 2 shots is limiting (if you have 2 attackers, and miss one on the first shot, then you only have one shot left to hit both attackers - - not good odds).

Here is a link to one place that sells the Sabre:

I have one in each of my Get Home Bags (me, my wife, and each of my sons) along with one in my wife's purse and car consoles. I don't know if it is legal to have in your state, but it is here in Texas (I noticed you are in Texas as well - - but this comment is more for peope in other states), but you should look before you buy to make sure you can possess it.
