I took the plunge and bought a Palmetto State Armory freedom upper. The price was right. Now I have to see if the quality is right.

From what I have been reading, the Palmetto State Armory freedom uppers are made by PSA, but are not chrome lined barrels. In all reality, how many shooters "need" a chrome lined barrel? How many people send enough rounds down range to justify the extra cost of a chrome lined barrel? That is where the freedom uppers come into play.

Let me know what you think of this build:

  • PSA 16" Mid-length, 5.56 NATO, 1:7, Melonite, Freedom, Keymod Lightweight Upper, model number 7779901. I went with the lightweight model for weight reduction. I plan on using this rifle for hunting predators. Mid-length for reduced recoil.
  • Spikes tactical stripped lower.
  • CMMG lower parts kit, with fire control group
  • Impact weapons systems receiver end plate with quick connect
  • Bravo company receiver extension and buffer
  • PSA premium bolt carrier group
  • Standard charging handle

Still trying to decide on trigger guard, buttstock and pistol grip.

EDIT

Went with:

Magpul MBUS flip-up sights
Magpul grip (black)
Magpul enhanced polymer trigger guard
Magpul
Magpul ACS-L Carbine Stock

Optics:

Nikon P-233 3-9x40 BDC
Leupold Mark 2 integral mounting system

Just recently (last week deal)got the freedom keymod kit with melonite barrel and magpul furniture. They have stepped up their shipping game. I had my parts kit in 4 days.

Gun Firearm Trigger Rifle Airsoft

This one is on my $35 anderson lower.. so far, so good. Just got my palmetto enhanced trigger group @$29 today. 3 day shipping was awesome. Gonna put it in tomorrow..

I also posted this on your coyote thread...but thought it was relevant to palmetto... mines not a light weight barrel tho. Govt profile, melonite.

I purchased a PSA Blem lower with MOE furniture for 189 with free shipping. Figured I would just put it away until a good deal on an upper showed up. The next week a freedom upper with a SS barrel and MOE for-end went on sale for 199 with free shipping. So I ended up with a nice little AR for a pretty decent price.

Leaning towards Ergo grip, magpul ctr and not sure about the trigger guard.
I bought a similar PSA rifle kit and couldn't be happier. It was my first Melonite barrel, and Im impressed with it so far. Its suppose to have better accuracy potential than chrome lined barrels and excellent corrosioin resistance. I think their melonite Freedom rifle kits are the best value on the market and I recommend them to my friends. I paid $499 with free shipping and no tax!
Here is the kit I bought and the review I posted on the PSA website:

Happy.........With Caveats. Review by Trigger Puller

The Good:
The quality of the components is impressive, with very smooth, even anodizing, and a precise fit that compares to any top tier Manufacturer. There are no milling marks or blemishes whatsoever and the upper and handguard line up perfectly. The Melonite finish on the barrel is beautifully smooth and dark with crisp laser engraving. The kit also comes with quality Magpul furniture that adds to the package. Ive fired about 100 rounds so far without any issues, and couldn't be happier.

The Bad:
When I inspected the kit, I noticed that the handguard had some play and discovered that the barrel nut was very, VERY loose and the gas block was misaligned (touching the handguard). Fortunately, the barrel nut didn't require a special tool and I was easily able to tighten it with a cresent wrench and align the gas block with an allen wrench. The finish on the Bolt carrier is also a bit rougher than another BCG that I bought from PSA, but functions fine, and I expect the action to smoothen out as it breaks in.

Overall:
I'm impressed with the quality of the components, but a bit disappointed with the hurried assembly and lack of QC. The issues I had could have easily been avoided with a little more attention during assembly, but were easily fixed with simple hand tools. This is a great value for a free floated rifle kit and I would only recommend a careful inspection before shooting (as with any firearm purchase).
