On December 16th my son and I planted son onions in raised beds behind our house. Over the past week some of them have started getting ready to pull up. This is my first year to raise onions.

My son and I planted three different types of onions. Some smaller ones and some larger 10-15Y. I think this is ideal as not all of them will be ready at the same time. Once dried these will last for a month, maybe more.

Onions are one of my favorites.
I have been growing multiplying onions every year for the past 15 yrs,...all from the original 3 plants.
With the price of onions lately, I'm planning on planting some 10-15Y's this fall.

These onions were really easy to grow. The 1015Y's are still growing, they might be ready to pull up in another month or two. These were fertilized every two weeks with 21-0-0 until the first part of April. In April until now I have been using 13-13-13 to promote root growth. The 21-0-0 promotes a large green top. As the onion matures, the sugars are pulled from the tops into the bulb. The taller & bigger the top, the bigger the bulb will be. When you plant your onions, put down some 10-20-10, or some 13-13-13 and mix into the soil very well. Two weeks after planting start the 21-0-0 and repeat every two weeks. Maybe even through in a little 10-20-10 in march or april - but not too much.
