I liked the beret,
When it was like the yellow and blue shoulder cords, a distinction,
it was worn only by the Cavalry
Then they gave it ta everybody.

I hated that damn thing. Never fit in the pocket worth a damn, got all pizza man kn you when the wind blew from the right, held too much dirt and I hated slthe mess shaving a new one made. If you wanna wear that thing find your way to a unit that does. Me I was happy with my PC.

Nope the barf bag is still going to be part of the dress uniform but not worn with ACU's anymore, except for SF, Rangers, and Airborne units.
I wore a maroon one for 4 years when I was part of an LRSD from 89-94, I hated it even though I'd "earned the right" to wear it they are worthless.

Glad someone finally listened to the troops though, I always thought it was a stunt to make dirty nasty "legs" feel special anyways.

I still have that maroon beret, it's 22 years old now.

Love that line about the "nasty," legs... I wore a maroon one too, 83-87, even though we were attached to SOCOM and could have technically worn the Green one, didn't feel right, as i was never "tabbed," felt like an imposter doing so...

The Green Beret was, always will be, a symbol of the utmost quiet professional soldiers...

Now, I am very happy to be just a simple, Paratrooper.... :D:

The second best moment was earning my gold jump wings.......


I saw a woman wearing a Green Beret because she was attached in some support role to an SF Group, I had to do a double take though and looked for the long tab to be sure of what I saw. She was at least jump qual'd.

In my day (decades ago) only 3 groups wore Berets and all had to EARN them. SF (green), Rangers (black), and Airborne (Maroon).

Like all of these new PC ways, they now elevate peoples status without earning these distinctions through individual achievement. IE: Obama getting the Nobel Prize, kids getting trophies for just being involved in sports instead of winning an actual event, doing away with valedictorians because others may lose self esteem. All part of the overall goal of removing excellence from our society and replacing it with mediocrity.

I wore a beret cause I earned it and I was damn upset when they stole the black one from the Rangers

I too was Airborne. When I was stationed in Italy we were the Only Airborne unit that wore the Maroon beret as our Bn Cdr. made it so. Shortly after it was returned to units at Bragg as well. Guess I'm telling my age huh?:D: Green = SF, Black = Rangers, Maroon = Airborne. Yes they are useless for anything other than pride, morale boosters, and that good ole "Esprit de Corps". Oh and they look sharp when properly worn. The Best berets IMO were the Italian wool berets we bought downtown. Once shaped right, they were the deal! When I first wore mine we were still in "Pickle suits" as the BDU's were still being manufactured and not enough to issue to troops yet.
The "Nickle oh Nasty" was my first Airborne unit.

Mine would probably have disappeared also, if it wasnt for my wife. She snuck into my apt when we were engaged and scarfed it. I never noticed that it was gone. That Christmas when I formally gave her the engagement ring, my present from her was my beret, bronzed and mounted on a mahogony base. It still sits in my study today, 37 years later. Good women are God's gift to us neanderthals!
