apparently China wants to build a new canal in Nicaragua, connecting Atlantic and Pacific.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013/jun/12/nicaragua-canal-waterway-panama

"Nicaragua's parliament is due to vote on Thursday on one of the biggest infrastructure projects in Latin America's history – a trans-oceanic canal that is to be built and run by a Chinese company.
If it goes ahead, the $40bn (£26bn) scheme, which is twice as expensive as Brazil's Belo Monte dam and likely to be three times longer than the Panama canal, looks set to transform global shipping and jump start the economy of this Central American nation."

1) China continues to display their World Power status / desire.
2) this would free them from using 'our' canal in Panama
3) considering the Chinese record on things environmental

this could be a mess.

Let them have at it. Besides, a little competition never hurts.
Even though the it was once considered of military great importance, I feel America no longer needs the panama canal.

The Chinese already have over 15,000 people in Panama and basically control the Panama Canal already, albeit final control is under the Panamanian Government. They have 50 year leases on the ports on each end of the Canal. They also hold the contract for maintenance and operation.

The canal hasn't been ours since 1999, thanks to Carter giving it away in an agreement back in 1977.

They are mainly looking at options to make another canal that can handle the Super Freighters of today. The costs of adding it to the existing system, apparently has been estimated to be higher than building a whole new system. Not to mention closing of the canal for a few years.

We should have done it 30 years ago.

Instead we had a "war on drugs" which consisted of "import the drugs of those friendly to us."

We should have done this a long time ago. We just got slapped. Good show ChiComs.
