Hi, newbie poster here from middle TN. I am thinking about buying my first rifle/shotgun. Don't know any thing about guns. Any suggestions for an all around rifle/shotgun. Don't want anything fancy, just basic. Thanks

I was where you are 2 years ago and my Dad broke it down to me like this, your first one is all about what it is you want, home protection or general use weapon, after the first one the order is up to you but common sense, as far as being a survival gun most on here will tell you and I would agree a .22lr

1. .22lr OR
2. handgun(9mm .380 or larger for personal/home protection)
3. Large rifle for hunting
4. Shotgun
5. Battle rifle/Assault rifle

This is what I have gone with, I went a little out of order, mainly because my dad gave us guns here and there. You will ask 10 different people and get 12 different opinions. Depending on your budget you are going to hear ruger 10/22, awesome gun, you can find much much cheaper .22 s out there, it's a fact, but you get what you pay for. Also being this is your first gun, getting a .22 is the cheapest ammo available you can practice more and hunt small game with it. Again you are going to hear a lot on here, do your homework read each post and decide, good luck.

I think everyone's first gun should be a .22RF rifle. My favorite choice is Ruger's 10/22. Here's a link.
http://www.ruger.com/products/1022/index.html

The .22 is cheap to practice with because a brick of 500 round only costs about 20$. For some high power rifle rounds, 20$ will only buy you 20 rounds. That's a lot of practice for just 20$. It produces much less noise and recoil than larger rounds, so you'll learn good habits faster.

On my homestead my .22 is the first thing I reach for when I think there's something I need to deal with. It won't stop a charging grizzly, but it will keep predator's away from the chicken coop and put rabbit/squirrel stew on the dinner table.

You will move on the larger calibers as your needs expend over time, but you'll find that your .22 is something you'll want to have with you for the rest of your life.

A basic ruger 10/22 and a few bricks of ammo. It will serve you forever, no matter how advanced or skilled you become in using a firearm, and it will be a great aid in accomplishing that. It's like a first car that's reliable, fast, sexy, has great crash-ratings, handles awesome, and is dirt cheap. All rolled into one impossibly awesome package.

My first gun ever was a Mossy 500 combo w/ slug barrel. From there I went with a Marlin 795 which is just as good as a Ruger for quite a bit less. Then a Marlin 336.

Next I picked up a few handguns before settling on a pair of XD9sc.

Then a Marlin 60, then my SKS.

My next purchase will likely be an AK, then I should be done. ;)

1St Rifle? If you missed owning an air rifle of some sort as a kid (personally I think kids should be issued with one at birth), then a cheap used .22lr single shot with open sights. Here's my thinkin'. Open sights. Good with them is better with optics and once you learn the trick of them, you'll never be a slave to your scope. Single shot. THINK OUT YOUR SHOT! (that air rifle thing again). Buying a semi auto nearly always comes with the thought "If I miss the 1st time, I can get in a fast follow up shot.' No, it just means you can miss 2 or 3 times more in quick succession. Simplicity. Semi autos are (can be) reliable, no argument, but....just count the moving pieces.

Probably my favorite .22 is my neat old Savage 3B (1940-something) long barrel. NZ$50 worth of perfect reliability and old world loving engineering. Walnut stock that just about glows in the dark when oiled, shoots short, long or long rifle rounds with utter indifference. Add a good slip on suppressor and subsonic ammo and you can shoot from your bedroom window without waking the missus (done it).

My sincerest piece of advice is get a single shot .22lr and practice practice practice your up-point-shoot standing shot, it's the one you will use most often out in the field. In a year's time and a sack of dead stuff later, rethink the semi-auto thing.

Without knowing your purpose it's really hard to give you advice. Since you said all around rifle/shotgun I will presume you are looking for a "do it all" gun. While the .22lr may be a good start gun it's hardly a good do it all gun. You could look at some of the offerings from places like Rossi where you can buy one gun with 2-3 different barrels. One in .22lr, one in 12ga and one in .308 would make a good all around gun (albeit very light on the self-defense aspect). Another option along the lines of a combo gun is the Savage M42. Not in stores quite yet the M42 is an over/under which has both a .22lr barrel and a .410 barrel.
