would be one of those Railroad line crew double cab pickups that you lower down wheels that engage and ride on the rails,, 'railroads are the most direct routes,, avoid a lot of built up areas,, and typically are grades of 3 % or less so fuel usage should be minimal with no stops and accelerating back to speed and no gearing down to climb steep hills,,, and RRs have little shelter & tool shacks and stuff along them

alternately you can rig a bicycle with a really wide rim to fit the top of the rail, and a 3rd wheel rigged like a sidecar to reach the opposite rail (4 feet 8 inches center to center btw) to balance you

Railroad isn't a bad idea. You would definitely need a vehicle that can rapidly escape the railroad incase of traffic (can anyone say train wreck!?) Plus you could hit supply stations. Large quantities of coal, fuel, chemicals etc. Small towns along the way could be useful to seek refuge.

But I'd say if you wanted to use a bicycle why not just ride on the tracks? I mean it will be bumpy for sure. But at least theres no serious modification and you can jump off at any time for emergency scenario. Would you be planning on carrying a lot of weight?

When I lived in China I bought one of those suspensionless bikes that everyone has and I had a girl hop on the back and I piloted her across down for about 10 km.. it wasnt bad at all. plenty of bumps but she got over it :) Tell you what though. Those Chinese may make garbage for us, but those bikes are bomb proof. I bought mine used and never maintained it and it is probably still running just fine (under someone else though!)

The problem with the tracks is if somebody wanted what you have they will know exactly where you will be. Railroads don't have a whole lot of turn offs and if they do they usually don't go verry far. As to buying a highrail there isn't a big need so they can be picked up for pretty cheap.

my idea was for SHTF with no trains running and to take the fastest least traveled route out ahead of any one who wanted to rob me....with fairly slight grades,, and reasonably straight routes,, no intersections and few places where the rails run thru towns,, I figured I could make really good time

with the bicycle rigs or moped rigs It would not be too hard to get off th tracks if yo felt them rumbling from an approaching train.

thanks everyone for responses,, I believe the more out of the box things we all explore,, the more likely we are to have options, and maybe strike upon a good one now and then...this may or may not be a good one,

I can see some advantage to having railroad wheels attached.
Like getting across a canyon or river where there is no road bridge.
You wouldn't have to be on the rails for a long time to do that.

I think it also offers an unexpected escape route, just crossing a swamp from
one road to another.

Beware of trains!!
