i'm not sure where to start. maybe with this..........the ef5 missed my home by less than a half mile. my home has a little wind damage but nothing like your seeing on TV, i am safe and sound, just tired.
i think three list will work best in talking about what was in my bag, not in my bag and what i needed.
first what was in and used
1. gloves, heavy duty Carhartt ............worked great but will carry an extra pair from now on
2. water..........had almost a 2 gallons on me when i went in 15 mins after the storm hit. it was givin out within the first hour....people needed a drink and used some to clean wounds. all i had left for myself was a army issue G.I canteen. i didnt get water replaced until i got back to my truck.
3. first aid supplies.............again gone in the fist hour. what i needed was larger bandages and something to clot blood.
4. saftey glasses...........my tinted ones worked great, they are Stihl chainsaws brand, when the sun went down i had nothing. will add a pair of clear to the bag.
5. G.I. molle 3 day assult pack............worked better than i ever hoped for.
6. food in my bag............small jar of penutbutter, power bars, pre packed tuna and crackers. i never even thought once about using my stove which was in my bag. i didnt care what i was eating, i just shoved it down my hole and kept going.......taste was the last thing on my mind.
7. multi tool..........used it, but mostly used a pair of Klien lineman pliers and and a big 20oz framing hammer.
8. boonie hat..........lost my hat, still dont know when and where. had the boonie in the bag
9. long sleeve shirt, lucky it was in the bag.
10. Duct tape and a sharpie...............used half a roll and it seemed like it was always being used.......wrote on it with sharpie
i was gonna put in what wasnt needed, but i'm gonna skip that. even though i didnt use it this time the next event could be totally different, i would hate for some one to take things out they might need.
things i wanted.
1. friends, or i should say ones with a clue and that were prepped. i felt alone....i wish i had a better group that was serious.
2. more medical, mine was a personal kit, and stuffed full of extras.
3. water, should have watched it better. but others needed it more than i did
4. latex gloves, i thought they were in the bag????????
5. tool to turn off gas lines...........hearing the hiss of gas as your clearing and looking for people in the first hours was creepy, just kept waiting for someone to light up and go boom!
6. bandanna.............yes more than one person on this site has said to have one. this alone with a bigger bottle of hand wash would have made life better
7. to be in better shape, 2 hours i'm good, 4 hours i'm slowin down, 6 hour mark i'm needing a break about every hour. i'm also getting older.
8. taller boots. was wearing 6inch timberland Pro steel toes, would love to have had 8 inch with a more aggressive lugged sole. i slipped more than once.
9. gum or candie........had this weird taste in my mouth, i know this is odd, but it was something i wanted more than once.
10 small pry bar.........my hammer work great, but a tool to use along with this would have been great.
i hope this can help someone, i have had folks laugh at my bag and say things like do you drag that thing everywhere............they dont laugh now.:taped:
God bless all of us on this site, and all those who prep to take care of themselves and others.
: to all those who have those small packs, it's better to have than have not. gear up, you can always throw it out, but you cant find it when you in the CHIT
