Just emailed the contact at sportsmansguide.com to find out the details on their MRE's (manufacturer, pack date, etc) and got the following in reply.

Thank you for your email.
They are made by Major Surplus and Survival.
If you have any questions please contact us.

So I google this Major Surplus place and find this site: http://www.majorsurplus.com/Default.aspx

And the MRE's there are the same price as Sportsmans Guide: http://www.majorsurplus.com/Deluxe-Complete-MRE-P14463C1975.aspx

Just thought it was kinda funny that I didn't get anything but a referral to another retail vendor that appears to be a competitor.

Anyone have any experience with these guys and their MREs? Want to get some feedback to help prevent getting screwed. The price of $69 seems pretty good (http://www.majorsurplus.com/Deluxe-Complete-MRE-P14463.aspx). But I'm used to stuff like this not turning out well with online purchases lol...

Thanks.

i might be totally wrong but when i checked those MREs I think it said they were NATO MREs and by looking atthe pics of them it seemed they had some really weird entrees

I think I am wrong on those MREs but from the website they do not come w/ heaters

Probably okay if you don't mind no heaters. But for $69, and then figuring on shipping costs, you could probably find some real MREs locally on craigslist for less.

Gun shows often have US GI MREs cheaper than you'll find civilian ones, plus no shipping. At least down here in the southwest. It might be worth a try just to see. And remember, most gun show dealers are open for a little price negotiation, especially if you're buying several cases.

I found this at the Major Surplus site "Do not confuse Major’s MREs with gun show, off-the-street MREs. Those are illegal to sell or own." That is completely false. They are not illegal to sell, nor illegal to own. They say "not for civilian resale" on them, but there is no law against it whatsoever. I despise companies that use tactics like that to boost interest in their own products.

Just got this second reply from the customer support people at Sportsmans Guide when I mentioned that the original info he gave me just pointed to another retailer.....

Thank you for your email.
The manufacturer is Ameriqual Foods in Evansville, IN.
Each package has a date listed on it. What we have is current production.
DATE EXPLANATION INFORMATION:
http://www.mreinfo.com/us/mre/mre-date-codes.html
If you have any questions, please contact us.

Thanks again for all your suggestions.

I'd watch out, major surplus and survival's products have gone down hill the last couple of years. They used to be the goto catalog for survivalist clothing, bags and equipment in the mid-90's. Now they don't sell much surplus at all, everything is poorly made knockoffs, mil spec + is one of their products, I hate them, they are worse then real mil spec items for more money.
I bought some of their MRE's in the 90's. The used to be rebranded actual military MRE's, packaged in different exterior bags, but the contents are the same. I understand that isn't the case anymore.
