I live in Houston, I have an escape plan to get to my wife's grandparents 2 hours drive south. If you know anything about Houston, you know that if an event happened that required people to leave town, you know that your vehicle is as good as a wooden sword in Afghanistan, so we would have to walk. Now, I've planned a route, but to get to that path I would have to drive/walk through the city to get to the outskirts of the city.

Without explaining my entire escape plan, basically I plan to meet up with my wife (which isn't that hard given our locations for work), and make our way to the path. I plan to drive my vehicle as far as I can before I abandon it. My problem is, we'll be caring our BOBs, as well as my shotgun, Remington 870, 20" barrel. I don't want my gun taken away if I run into a patrol unit, police, traffic control, possible US troops, as well as freaking people out, or causing a lot of chaos because most city people aren't used to shotguns (i was born and raised in the hills of Arkansas where shotguns are normal and sometimes used to identify one another..haha joke)

ANYWHO...what is a good method of transporting the weapon? Breaking it down is not an option because it is my only weapon of self-defense besides my knife. No more .357, sold it; and my Winchester .30-30 is in Arkansas, so really no other good self defense weapons. I have a slip to put over it, but any law enforcer or boy in green will know what it is and be wary of me traveling with it. I'm not saying I'll have to use, so breaking it down I guess could be an option, but like I said if I HAD to use a gun, it is my only one. SUGGESTIONS

Also if you are in the same situation please share your plans or ideas. You're advice and plans are helpful to me and others.

Dude..great idea! Luckily I have a soft guitar case, although it would look kind of funny with a lopsided oddly shaped guitar case, cause I don't plan on taking my guitar hah. I could fill it with clothes I suppose, but that would give me extra weight that I don't need. I'm looking at a walk that takes 2 hours to drive. I don't want any extra junk.

Anyone walking out of any town needs a jogging stroller. You can get one used at Goodwill or Salvation army for less than 50.00 they have big tires, can go through rough terrain. Can go fast most have a canvas awning on them. you can lay your gun in there with a blanket over and even carry some more gear in it. In the even someone is hurt most of them are rated to carry up to 150lbs and may be able to handle more. They fold up for storage and can fit in the trunk of most any car. you can carry a large amount of water in the stroller beside your gun this is my plan.

Get a map of the sewer system/storm drains. (in most major cities, they run somewhat parallel to the streets) Then get 2 headlamps with extra batteries.

A smudge of Vick's vapo-rub under your nose helps with the smells down there.

@ dirk: i would love to go back home, but my wife got accepted into a nursing program here and so we had to move here..the only one out of the 6 she applied too was here in houston! in 2 years we'll head back to the hills.

@dishgirl: that would be ideal, but the move here to the city has put us on a strict budget, so i'm making do with what i have. when my wife becomes a nurse i'll buy everyone a hand gun cause she'll make more than me!! just kidding i'm not gonna buy you guys a hand gun i'm sorry to get your hopes up.

thanks guys for all the help..i'm leaning more towards the small duffel bag or the little league bag..the sewers are out of the question, as "don'tbuy potteryfrom me" stated, they are very un-predictable and i'd rather take my chances with the bags.

the small bags are good ideas, thanks guys for your help.
