It's awful. Just plain Nick Cage awful. 0 out of 5 stars. Don't waste your money or time. If you want to know more, keep reading for details and spoilers.

I never saw the original Wicker Man but have heard it's good. I bought this copy by mistake thinking it was the original, and watched it in hopes it might be a good film. I was wrong.

It takes place in contemporary times, where Cage is a California motorcycle police officer. He is on scene to observe a horrific car accident, where a little girl apparently died but no bodies discovered at the scene. Some contrived events (namely a letter from his fiance claiming a missing daughter, with a photo of the same girl in the car accident) lead him to attempt to alone conduct a missing person investigation on a remote island 500-1000 miles away off Washington State. Yes, you read this correctly. He, by himself, heads to a remote Washington State isolated private island to conduct a missing person search. This would be far afield of any legal authority or any expertise of a California highway patrol Sergeant...

He travels woefully unprepared with no real supplies or communication equipment or anything much useful. On the island, while "investigating" this patrol officer runs around offending and yelling at all of the locals who are universally unwelcoming and hostile. He engages in threats, intimidation, breaking and entering, and general abuses that further alienate himself to the strange and hostile populace. Clearly something big is amiss on the island, but he doesn't take the hint and carries on.

In the end, he falls right into a big blatantly obvious trap anyone paying attention could predict 30 minutes into the film. He was lured there to be a human sacrifice for the twisted townspeople's ritual. And he is brutally sacrificed. The film also fails to answer why the locals have an elaborate ruse to lure him to the sacrifice and all the unfolding drama, when they repeatedly have him in a position where they could just tie him up... yet they rescued him and released him instead. It makes no sense at all.

I cannot give many more details because I found myself fast forwarding through slow absurd dialogue and buildup to an obvious conclusion. It was slow, insultingly stupid, contrived, and just plain boring and dumb. It's probably one of the worst films I've seen with big name actor(s). It was so very very dumb... do not waste your time or money.

I have never seen the original. I checked Netflix and they only have the Nick Cage version. I'll look for it.

We used to enjoy Cage movies, but I never considered him to be a good actor. The emotions he portrayed always appeared too phony to me.

A lot of former superstars are doing crap movies these days. Jean Claude Van Damme, Steven Seagal, and even Bruce Willis are all doing movies that are sometimes so bad I cannot watch them through to the end. I suppose they all have to eat.
