This is a question I received off youtube about the mossberg 500.

i just got the mossberg 500 is that good for hunting and my other question is for deer hunting do you prefer buck shot or slugs thank you for reading this oh wait and did you or can you make a video on the 500
The Mossberg 500 is an excellent choice for hunting. I have taken a many squirrel with my Mossberg 500. My model 500 was given to me by my dad when I was 14 years old - I am now 40. That mossberg shotgun has served me well over the years.

As for buckshot or slugs - that depends on distance.

Lets say your hunting less then 25 - 35 yards - then I would prefer 00 buckshot for deer or hogs. Stay away from the cheap winchester buckshot, it has terrible patterns even at 25 yards.

For more then 35 yards I would probably switch over to a slugs.

Now lets say your shooting at 50+ yards, then I would consider getting a rifled slug barrel for my mossberg model 500.

I'd like to add that using buckshot to hunt deer in some areas of the U.S. is actually illegal. You must use slugs. I don't think they should call it "buck"shot in those areas! Check your local laws before getting into the stand.
